Why is there an asterik next to the track number?

When I reopen a saved audio CD compilation, I sometimes notice that there are asteriks next to some of the track numbers. What does this mean?

An astericks normally means that you split an audio file into two files.

No I haven't done that, but I'm thinking it might have something to do with making changes to a file but not resaving the compilation afterwards.

This doesn't cause any errors, does it?
