Exploding Duron Video

Postby Ian on Wed Nov 30, 2005 8:44 pm

I thought this video was kinda funny. These guys are trying to overclock a Duron and take the heatsink off.

It looks like it blew a hole right through the table.

Seems like it was staged-- a Duron couldn't be running up near 4ghz with NO cooling-- the fan was off on the HSF and everything when you could see the screen. That hole seemed to be blown way too cleanly.

I am guessing small firework in a hole right under the processor.

(or, am I, a week into the worst cold I've had in years, being Captain Obvious? ;) )

Yeah, you're probably right. If the core on the CPU blew, it would probably not blow a hole in the table, let alone the motherboard's PCB. It would go the direction of least resistance.. which would be up.

It's still funny though, hearing those guys going "Shit! Shit!"

staged, but damn hilarious just the same

they weren't using the hoxbox, you can run a duron at 4ghz oc'ed with no heatsink and it runs 87F

Best I ever did with a Duron was a 600MHz model I up-clocked to 1.1GHz at 133MHz FSB (air-cooled, Alpha PAL heatsink). The same chip would also go to 1GHz at 100MHz, which was quite a bit harder on it as the clock multiplier was a lot higher.

I do think someone did have a good movie of frying an Athlon or Duron at one time, but that one's a fake.

This one isn't done as cleanly, you can see smoke coming out from under the table

THG did one (i think it might have been their very first video).

i watched that new video

im sorry i just have a very hard time believing a processor would actually explode off the motherboard, let alone put a whole through pcb and a thin piece of wood

pcb boards are so damn hard to break when you bend them in half
