Plextor and new drives (18x, yes 18x DVD)

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

Postby RJW on Tue Oct 18, 2005 4:55 am

Plextors fancy features could be added by firmware alone.
Powerrec - Is allready available in all Benq/Philips models. Thermobalanced Writing.
Still I agree that it's more likely to be a own drive of Plextor probally usseing Sanyo chipset.

The specs of the new burners have now been published by Plextor Europe.
In english it's easier to read than japanese ...

I noticed something very important regarding the new AutoStrategy for the PX-760A
« The user can select the write strategy from the AUTOSTRATEGY database or from the database that resides in the drive's firmware by activating a different Mode »

and also:
Write strategy creation:
« This function offers to create a new write strategy for your blank media. The drive will create a new write strategy in the AUTOSTRATEGY database without recording a disc. It is possible to create several write strategies for the same media, which can be useful if there is a quality difference among media with the same MID code »

BTW there is also a new firmware 1.09 out for the PX-716A/SA/UF:

For the best writing quality, the drive's AUTOSTRATEGY technology selects the optimized write strategy for every DVD disc and, if necessary, creates a new write strategy for unknown media. (DVD+/-R)
A separate database stores all strategies that are created by the AUTOSTRATEGY function for media that is not currently supported in the firmware. A maximum of 31 write strategies can be held in the non-volatile memory of the drive. The entries can be activated or de-activated, and deleted. The list of database entries can be viewed and saved or printed.

The user can select the write strategy from the AUTOSTRATEGY database or from the database that resides in the drive's firmware by activating a different Mode.

Remark: This function is only available for DVD+R and DVD-R media (4X and higher).

1. Auto Selection Mode:

The drive will select the best write strategy, whether it is located in the AUTOSTRATEGY database or in the firmware database. If no suitale strategy is found, AUTOSTRATEGY will create a new, optimized strategy in the database.

2. AUTOSTRATEGY On Mode (Forced):

The drive will create a new write strategy for every new recording, whether a corresponding strategy exists already in the firmware or not.

3. AUTOSTRATEGY On Mode:
The drive will use the write strategies from the AUTOSTRATEGY database for recording. If no suitable strategy is found, a corresponding write strategy from the firmware's database will be used.

4. AUTOSTRATEGY Off Mode:
The drive will only use the write strategies from the firmware's database for recording. If no corresponding write strategy is found, the default write strategy will be used.

here's something new. i like it :D

PlexEraser

PlexEraser is a data destruction utility that makes a recorded CD-R or DVD disc unreadable. The drive will "re-record" over the Lead-in and data sectors of a write once disc rendering the disc data unusable. Initially this feature will support DVD+/-R and CD-R media. Firmware upgrades will add support for DVD+/-R DL media.

That sounds a LOT more like SolidBurn then Autostategy.... maybe Plextor learned something from BenQ :D

yup! :D
something good came out of that partnership (read: rebranding).

thought you gotta give Plextor some credit. their AutoStrategy preceeded SolidBurn.

Interesting. I always wondered why you couldn't do that, although I wonder what the downsides would be (burning a hole through the media completely? ;) )

I hope more drive manufacturers start to use AutoStrategy/SolidBurn-type technologies in their drives as this will hopefully cut down on bottom-tier disc manufacturers borrowing media codes to improve their discs' support.

Not to me.
Is Philips marketing really working or is SolidBurn +WOPC just much better technology as Autostrategy. So far the theoretical info I got seems to say that Philips technology is the better one. The results so far say the same.
One thing here that Philips looks theoretical the better one comes because Philips has some propaganda + technical articles about the technology available. Why I only see very short propaganda on autostrategy.
The only thing plextor now has the freedom which Benq gave you through there tools and Philips gives through NERO.

Well, SolidBurn actually works.... and Autostrategy never seemed to do anything when I tried to use it.... so I'm basically HOPING that Plextor's new drive will have a better Autostrategy, one that actually DOES SOMETHING.

Hopefully not since the new AutoStrategy database doesn't require the use of a disc!

Anyone else find it odd that Plextor America hasn't announced this drive yet? Usually Japan, Europe and America announce their new products within a day or two of each other.
