Actually, activating the real-time chart significantly affected the results reported for the scan (e.g. no. of samples). The way KProbe builds the diagram takes a lot of CPU cycles. The author recommended that this option be left off. So it's no surprise that it was removed. If you want to see intermediate results while you scan, use CD-Speed.

You can still see real-time results without the chart enabled, you just have to watch the numbers at the bottom.

BTW. version 2.4.3 is supposed to be available, but I've been unable to get the auto-updater to DL it. The DL always fails.

The change log is the same as for 2.4.2. I'm not sure if Karr forgot to update it or what.

Thanks for the information- I just tried it out. And thank you for hosting it, Ian.

However, I think this version has introduced a bug in detecting drive properties. If I click on "Info / Drive", the "DriveInfo" window is displayed for a moment and the application dies. This is independent of ASPI/SPTI drivers and occurs for all 3 of my LiteOn drives (LTD-163, LTR-48246S and SOHW-1213S@1653S).

According to Karr, this will probably be the last version of KProbe (he actually said this about v2.4.5 but it had some bugs that needed to be fixed ). As I mentioned in the Subscriber Forum, KProbe will eventually be replaced by "LiteTool". Unlike KProbe, it will be officially supported by Lite-On.

On the issue of KProbe causing systems to reboot from my experience it is not ASPI most of the time. Here is what happened with me.

The installer is not creating the registration key for KProbe so it reboots the computer. When I followed instructions and looked for the key kprobe it did not exist so I did the registry entry method and it ran fine. I than tried changing it to ASPI and it still runs fine so it's the lack of the key being created in the first time installation that is causing most of these issues I have emailed this to the author also.

OK it's simple to change the driver in the registry:
- start the registry editor regedit
- go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KProbe"
- change the value of the key "SPTI" from 0 to 1

Or you can create a file "SPTI.reg" in notepad or whatever and paste this text:

The initial - go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KProbe" did not exist when I looked in registry. After I did an import of the above so that a HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KProbe existed I could than run it in either aspi or spti. The problem is that I even tried an older version 2.42 and still had the same issue. Because the initial key is missing the subkeys are not able to be created hence the rebooting of the operating system. So it's just a simple installer issue not installing the default registry keys so that they exist for it to read and write setttings from.

I think there are two topics crossing paths here. molitar is referring to the problems in altering the drivers. The problem and patch are described on the previous page of this thread.

The other problem is that KProbe died when querying DriveInfo. This seems to be fixed in version 2.5.1 (currently available at CDFreaks).

Just got around to trying 2.5.1. I think I'll stick with 2.4.2 or 2.4.3 at present: I routinely save my DVD scans with both linear and logarithmic scales (which I prefer) and CD scans logarithmic only (with KProbe 1).

In 2.4.3 and earlier, the logarithmic scales started at 0.1 but in 2.5.x, the lower value is 1. This means that all PIF counts of 1 don't show up on a logarithmic plot (CD Doctor did this too). OK, starting at 0.1 tends to dramatize the low counts but at least they're visible. The "ideal" solution, as far as I'm concerned, is to start the log plot at 0.8 or thereabouts. The 1-counts show up but don't dominate the chart.

I know that the charting widget in KProbe supports partial logarithmic decades (unlike Excel) because you can manually set a maximum. Also, I know that you can zoom in on a part of the chart by marking a region with the left mouse button pressed, but that's not a feasible solution for routine use and reproducible displays.

I guess I'd really like to be able to manually set the minimum as well as the maximum value (but that's not new ).
