Plextor and new drives (18x, yes 18x DVD)

Just when I thought that DVD writeable was maxed out at 16x, Plextor surprises us with an 18x burner.
Translation of specs (easy enough)
PX-760A/JP about 15000 yen (~150 USD) late November
PX-760SA/JP about 1800 yen (~180USD) December

18X +/- R
10X + R DL
6X DVD-R DL
DVD+RW 8X
DVD-RW 6X
CD-R 48X
CD-RW 24X
The top text says that the drive will be able to write to DVD 16X media at the 18X speed



(Looks like a Plextor drive and not an OEM re-brand)
Comes with three colors (faceplate change) starting for IDE and for SATA


Now the not so impressive model:

DVD±R DL 8X (will be a firmware update? For –DL I think it said it is only 6 from factory)

Able to burn single layer DVDR a whopping 10 seconds faster then competing drives

But 10x DVDRDL speeds should be a somewhat decent advantage... I just hope they aren't planning on pushing Verbatim 2.4x DVD+RDL to 10x!! That media can't even handle 8x recording properly and yet so many drives try to push it (*cough*Pioneer & BenQ*cough*)

I noticed:

1°) There is not mention for Q-Check (such as PI/PO or TA test) and AutoStrategy for the "Super Multi" PX-750A.
Is this an other indication that it is probably a rebadged BenQ DQ60 ?

2°) There is a photo of a DVD-RAM in an opening cartridge.
Does that mean that the drive supports burning DVD-RAM in a cartridge
or on the opposite that the disc needs to be removed from the cartridge in order to be written ?

The 760 looks like a Plextor, the 750 could be (like Frank1 shows) a Benq-OEM.

Maybe a Japanese speaker can check this for me.. but it looks like the only discs that will work at 18x are TY?

I wonder why the name of this drive is 760 and not 718. Plextor´s own writers had always the speed within like 708=8x, 712=12x etc.

But the last OEM´s have names like 740

So will it support YUDEN000T02 at 18x? or YUDEN000T03 at 18x? (or both?!). Since no one can really GET YUDEN000T03 the 18x DVD+R support might become moot

Ian, I looked on the article and the web page of plextor Japan

It says othing of TY bias
It just says burn 16X +/- at 18x with certified previous media
so maybe but maybe it will be anything the previous model could burn at 16x

As for Sanyo, the drive probably does use a Sanyo chipset along with possibly the Asahi Kasei ASP used in previous drives (the specs and block diagram show it can be tweaked for higher speeds)

If you translate the Japanese next to the 18x speed, it says "Solar induced electricity (Inc.)". This is the same thing that the goofy translators translate Taiyo Yuden to be.

Of course, that's just the recommended media list. Other media might work at that speed as well.

I didn’t see that I was looking at the 16x section and i thought it meant it will burn at the 18x

and the translator is correct that’s the elements of the kanji for TY's name
Taiyo=Sun
Yuden= Lightning? I think

But any who, yeah I apologize for that error (though if my translation is correct it should do the 16x list at 18x but is not recommended)

It can't be a BenQ drive; it supports all of the typical PlexTools features like GigaRec, VariRec, PowerRec, AutoStrategy, etc. Likely there is a new Sanyo chipset this drive will be using.
