I almost thought it was the TEAC DV-516DA.. then I noticed that the buffer size was different.

Isn´t the DV 516 a rebadged Pioneer?

No, Pioneer's drives read CD's at only 40x.

Maybe because Teac uses other FW? The 516D seems to be a Pioneer, like the Plextor PX 116

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?c ... ufactor=38

Both offers 48x CD-read

AOpen DVD-1648/AAP uses ALI chipset (old Acer Labs).

That's the most likely suspect based on chipset alone (DVR-1648 is a nice drive otherwise as well, btw).

I doubt Plextor would sacrifice resources to designing a dvd-rom in this day and age, but I could be wrong as well.

Actually, I'm tempted to get their older PX-116A3 (Via chipset), as it has PI/PIF scanning capability.

Just bought two black PX-130As (TLA#0001, bulk version). They look at least nice... Speed wasn't really an issue; they had to be black and should last for a long time. Now hoping that these Plextors last long for real...

The 130 is a rebadged Benq 1650. Don´t know whether the Plextor-FW is better.

Ah, so it was a Benq after all. Well, a different firmware won't extend the life of a DVD-ROM, I guess.
