Disc Labeling using ink & damage

Hi,

Is it true some solvents in the ink can damage the DVD dye by
diffusing into the plastic??

How many have suffered damaged DVD this way. What ink
did you use??

What is the most advisable ink to use?? Let me know asap
because all my DVDs written don't have labels and I am
forgetting which is which. I don't want to use sticker but only
writing directly on top of the surface.. but concerned it may
damage the dye.

well, Jiffy markers killed a couple of my CD-Rs.... but that stuff is pretty toxic so I'm not surprised

Hello,
Does anybody know which liquid is absolutly safe to use
in order to clean the writing done on a media with the markers sold as "special for writing on CD & DVD" ?
I have been using alcohol on a paper cloth so far [except on surfaces like inkjet printable or photo glossy]
and I am a bit warried about doing so ...

I don't know if there is anything safe to clean. Alcohol is bad-- that is what is in older style Sharpies (and non-CD-safe sharpies) that everyone got up in arms about being bad for CD writing.

I think the goal is to write once on the label with a water-based CD marker and leave it at that.

I use Sharpies and I've never had any problems,Memorex and some other companies make felt-tip pens that are CD safe:

I too use the non-toxic sharpies and have never had a problem.

I don't think that DVD's are as much in danger as CD's are- CD's have the information layer just underneath the label side, whereas for DVD's this is sandwiched between equally thick polycarbonate half-discs.

I use a special CD/DVD labelling pen (when I don't print directly to the disc with my Canon i865 ) and have not had any problems.

I have a Compact-Disc Pflege Set from a leading brand and on the CD cleaning solution bottle it is written:
« Contains: isopropyl alcohol »

So must I understand that:
- alcohol is safe in order to clean the polycarbonate surface covering the dye and the data
- and not safe for cleaning on the other side the "painting" of the label surface ?

On a standard CD, the "bottom" side is just straight plastic and the top/label side is actually where the data is; depending on the process used to make the disc it may or may not be well protected by a lacquer or some other "shielding". Cheap discs have very little protection, and it is thought the alcohol in normal Sharpie pens could possibly eat through it over time.

I wouldn't let any kind of alcohol get near my CDs, just on principle, but that's just me. It might be ok as long as you're careful not to get any on the top/label side, or you wipe it off IMMEDIATELY. I'd be worried it might seep in the sides and affect the bonding over time...

Thanks a lot for your advice: I will try to find a other solution than alcohol.

I already have a marker by TDK for non permanent marking that wipes off very easy with a bit of moisture on a cloth
