Benq DW1640 read error on Nanya-JC001 media

Hi,

I got a Pioneer DVD-110D about 3 weeks ago. I could easily
burn the 4X Nanya-JC001 discs with no problems. 2 days ago. I
got the BW1640 when I read that it has verygood media compatibility
and has lightning read speed and can read all kinds of
scratch discs. When I made my first burn and check it with
Nero CD-DVD speed "scan disc". I got some bad read error.

Looking at the list of media supported. I found out it doesn't
support Nanya media. For those experts on media compatibility.
How come certain discs can't be supported. There are some
bad sector (even when the disc is physically ok). Does it have to
do with the methods of writing and reading. Also I notice
the DW1640 media lists only support 8X, 16 on DVD-R,DVD+R.
It seems the DW40 drive can't support 4X DVD -R & +R discs??

In my country in asia. Nanya-JC001 is the least expensive.
Doesn't Benq plan to support it? Why not?

Can you post a quality scan and a tranfer rate scan.

If you want to add that media code to your firmware you can use the MCSE tool by Ala. It will allow you to rename another media code (one that will probably never get used) to your Nanya media, then after adding that media name you can then swap out that writing strategy to one that is known to work well, like MCC03 or T02 for example (you can try anyone in the list if one of those don't work well).

I used up to 5 Nanya discs all with read error some in 3 or 4
locations. I wonder why read error keep popping up when using
these discs. Can't they use some default writing strategies.

When I used Imation, Rita, Philips. No read error.

Can anyone explain how such read error can occur in the
Nanya when the disc surface are flawless

In BenQ's defense, didn't Nanya already say they're getting out of CDR and DVDR manufacturing? So it's going to be a bit of a moot point quite soon anyways.

However, it appears you're using possibly the first available firmware for the drive, and there have been numerous firmware updates since then. Please download the latest version (currently BSLB) and QSuite 2.0 from BenQ's webpage and try again. If the media doesn't burn properly with BSLB, please enable SolidBurn and see if that helps... it should fix any problems for you I think.

You are a genius. Upgrading to the latest firmware fixed it. I
thought the firmware I had was already the latest.

With full support of Nanya discs. I think Benq DW1640 is good. It
has 11.64X reading speed versus my old Pioneer DVR110D
9X speed and it can read scratched discs better as well as 48X
writing speed against the 110D 40X. The only great
advantage of Pioneer seems to be that it can last for a decade
while Benq, Lite-on, etc. drives gets broken after a year. Is
there anyone here who has experienced a broken Pioneer or
is it really Mil-spec with anti-shock mechanisms that can make
it write perfectly even when the van is mountain climbing in
rocky surfaces.

I'm glad it worked for you!

I can honestly say I've never had a Pioneer drive die on me... but I've also never had a BenQ drive die on me either (I thought I had a DOA once, but I'm pretty sure it was something screwy in the PC at the time). These days I only run maybe 200 or 300 burns through a drive before it gets retired though, so maybe I'm just not hard enough on them to kill them?
