DVD-RAM Media - Is 5x Available

I recently got the LG GSA-4163B burner. The box states that it's able to read & write DVD-RAM at "2x, 3x, 5x(Ver. 2.2)"

But I can't find any 5x DVD-RAM media on the internet, nor any "Ver. 2.2."

Do they mean it can r & w 5x on a 3x media? And what's Ver. 2.2?
And where can I find it?

Also, I never used cartridge media, and the disc tray on this unit looks like a regular CD tray, so I think it can't use DVD-RAM that comes in a non-removable cartridge. Is this correct?

correct, the LG drives do not use DVD-RAM in cartridges.
the kind that comes in non-removeable cartridges is no use to you.
i think however that there is also cartridge DVD-RAM that you can remove the disc from the cartridge.

i seriously doubt it will be able to write at 5x to 3x media.

Nope, it can't and unfortunately 5x DVD-RAM media is very hard to find. 3x media is finally becoming commonplace so it will probably be awhile before 5x media shows up at your local Walmart.

5x DVD-RAM is available from any professional Maxell dealer in Canada or the U.S. Maxell has in excess of 300,000pcs for all of North America... and given this is DVD-RAM we're talking about, that ought to last everyone for quite some time

Of course it's roughly 2x the price of 3x DVD-RAM

The drive manufacturers should really include some mention of the different DVD-RAM cartridge types, capacities, etc. This info can fit on a small card.

I found 5x DVD-RAM on the Maxell website. Unfortunately, it's not available in double-sided. If I have to choose between double-sided and 5x, I'll go w/double-sided because I intend to use DVD-RAM for backing up a PC - and double-sided means fewer discs to manage, although half the time it will result in a wasted ( unused) 4.7 Gig of disc space (on the last disc of a backup).

FOLLOW-UP QUESTION: Does anyone know of 5x Double-Sided (9.4 Gig) DVD-RAM discs without cartridges?

Maxell has made no annoucements, and since the media doesn't even come with a cartridge at this time, I'm not sure how far it's going to be advanced that way.

Optodisc, the #2 leader in DVD-RAM technology (the ONLY company I'm aware of that Maxell will oem DVD-RAM production to!) may be another thing entirely though. Although Optodisc has not released their 5x DVD-RAM media yet. Trust me... I keep trying to get it

Here in Germany I can´t find 5x DVD-RAM, too. From Optodisc only 3x media avaible, same with Vebatim, Maxell and Panasonic. From Ritek I only found 2x-media

Panasonic 5x DVD-RAM is available at for example feurio.com ...for about the same price as a DVD+R DL disc...
Cheaper at technikdirekt.de but probably not in stock.

let me ask another question on this thread related to DVD-RAM, ignoring the lack of compatability with a variety of players and DVD drives, and assuming it was only for bakcing up data files, which is better to use? DVD-RAM or DVD-RW?

DVD-RAM... it has more error correction and checking built into the format.

DVD-RAM is more safely than any RW-disc, had a better error-management.

Yes... that information has existed since last year

I'll know as soon as Optodisc releases their 5x DVD-RAM media, don't worry! I've been bitching to them about it long enough

5X certified DVD-RAM are sold here on the german website os-mediatrade:

It is the brand Panasonic and the MID code given by the vendor is MXL16
[Carefull: on the same site there are other ones 2~3x certified of MID code M01 J3002]



I have also been able tu buy these Panasonic 2~5x certified DVD-RAM
in a removable cartridge [type 2] for 5,99 € a piece
at MediaMarkt in Freiburg im Breisgau:
in DVD Identifier I got the MID code MXL16 for this label ...

My sample has the same generall logo but there is no japanese written on it.

On the rigt side at the bottom you can read:
Anti-sratch coating
Made in Japan
LM-HB47ME
So it looks like they put anti-scratch coated discs in the cartridge for the case you removed them , nice !

On the back of the package there is a code EAN for Europe and an other code UPC for America.

Yeah but then again who says that princo's A-grade aren't normally what other manufacturers most times would rade as C-grade or lower.

well, comparing serial numbers would solve give us an answer

me Panasonic (MID Matsushita) 5x disc has "Z5V5430A140034?" in the middle of the disc. The serial no is sort of sandwiched between 2 layers of polycarbonate.
