I have been VERY happy with my 4163b....my only concern with LG is that they seem to make alot of "middle" drives....ones that span he gap between drives that are supported alot by the company....take the 4120...the 4163b was announced a month later I think and was the better drive....so what do you think will be the better more supported drive...this one or the 4167?

they make their own drives.
LG is a maufacturer. the drives are designed jointly by Hitachi and LG, manufactured by LG

interesting.
but i think not likely. LG has shown no proclivity towards that sort of thing so far. and most of the drives they make go to OEMs who aren't interested in such things.

My LG combo drive does PI/PF scans It just depends on the chipset.

Some people already own the 4165 that can burn CD-R @48X (and not 40X as the LG site states) and DVD+R DL@6X (on MKM001) according to the last firmware, analyzed by ala42.

So the difference between 4165 and 4167 is not big... Maybe the electronic chip number, allowing 16X DVD-RAM or a faster DL by firmware upgrade in the future ?

looking carefully at the specs there are a few more differences not just the LightScribe.

4167: DVD-R 16x PCAV, no 12x
4166: DVD-R 12x PCAV, 16x CAV
the 4167 no 12x that could be an omission.
16x is CAV not PCAV on the newer (4166) drive? slower!

4167: DVD-RW 6x CLV
4166: DVD-RW 6x ZCLV
again if this is true then the 4166 is the slower drive.

4167: DVD-RAM 3x-5x PCAV
4166: DVD-RAM 5x CLV
don't know which of these will be faster <-- Edit: wrong of course 5x CLV is faster

4167: DVD+R 8x, 12x, 16x PCAV
4166: DVD+R 8x ZCLV, 12x PCAV, 16x CAV
again 4166 slower

and with your first post you catch me making typos and errors! LOL

anway, with the DVD-RW specs i mistekenly transposed the figures of the 2 drives, i've fixed it.
and my comment below is correct now.

the DVD-RAM i was ofcourse mistaken.

my point was that it's surprising that the 4166 is in some aspects faster and in other slower than the 4167.

as an aside, all the specs have to be taken with a grain of salt, i've seen more than one typo/incorrect specs on LG's websites before.
