BenQ DW1640 BSKB Firmware - SolidBurn and Overspeed Support

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

Postby 7-endless on Thu Aug 18, 2005 2:00 am

Enabling SolidBurn for "Supported disc" definitely helped for me with some leftover Fake TY02 discs that I have laying around. I first tried with the defaults (Non-activated for supported disc and Activated for unknown, Overspeed disabled) and it failed on two attempts about 1-2% in...after enabling SolidBurn it is now at 40%.

Now I just need to see if it can actually burn this Fake TY02 disc at 8x as my 1620 was never able to...

EDIT: Looks like it still is not able to burn the fake disc at 8x but at least the burn did complete.

Try to have Overspeed enable you might be surprised of that.

It only helps for the first part. So it seems that it's working. I allready expected low quality fakes would be the real test candidates for this system)
It chooses the optimize strategy for the burn after it's choice the drive can only correct with WOPC if WOPC can't correct it because of to big differences which means it still might break off.

Hello!

A question about Solidburn: If I turn SB on to let the Benq learn the properties of the Infosmart-media, can I disable SB after the learning-process, because I sometimes use media like Verbatim? I mean, use the Benq the learned strategy for the Infosmart after disabling SB or use the Benq the standard-strategy?

I'm pretty sure learned strategies are active all the time, even if SolidBurn is turned off for the moment. That's based on my own test results with it, so it's an educated guess.

Thanks, dolphinius_rex :)

But on other hand this means, if the 1640 learned strategy´s for faked TY or MCC, I have to delete those strategy´s when I want to burn real TY and MCC, I guess.

It's slightly worse then that.... you need to delete ALL strategys to get rid of even 1 :o

I'll confirm everything with BenQ next time I e-mail them. I'm hoping they'll enable individual removal of the SolidBurn strategies with their next release of QSuite.

Yup, enabling OverSpeed didn't seem to make a difference...oh well. I'm still not sure if I like the SolidBurn feature yet. Like Dolphinius said, it would be nice if we could just delete individual strategies instead of having to delete them all...

Otherwise, I wish I could burn the fake TY's without enabling SolidBurn for "Supported Disc" like I did previously with the 1620.

Solidburn don´t satisfies me, 3 trials:

X-Data DVD-R 4x (GSC01) = Error when trying to write LeadIn

Hyundai DVD-R 4x (Infosmart01) = Error when trying to write LeadIn

Spike 8x DVD-R (Fake MCC02RG20) = 8x selected, only 2,4x real speed, no improvements, strategy not saved

Sounds more like a hardware incompatability to me... or possibly a driver conflict.

Actually, just noticed that with OverSpeed enabled it took almost half an hour to burn a disc as opposed to the 14 mins it took without OverSpeed enabled....strange :-k

Apparently there is a bug with -R discs and overspeeding/SolidBurn. OC-Freak has reported it to Benq..

Good for him I have that bug too. If you enable solid burn for known media most minus disk confuse the calibration routine and they end up burning at 2.4, horribly at that. Plus seems to be Ok so far and at Least Ritek G05 works OK with solid burn on, right to 16x.
If you leave the burner at default settings mosts disks burn a their rated speeds, including the problematic minus , with good quality. So if your burning Minus might want to give solid burn a test then you'll probably have to turn it off to get good fast burns.

None of this sounds very promising...speaking as an interested potential 1640 buyer. This sounds like, "Let's all beta-test some wildly experimental new software!" :o

Tried overspeed with my acro circle 8x dvd-r, and it took 25min. Overspeed with TYG02 took 8:15 and never went above 8x.

I am having good luck with TYG02 and solidburn enabled for supported discs. I have got some of the best scans I have ever seen. I am burning at 8X no overspeed.

That sounds about right as it took 28 mins to burn the disc. The funny thing is that when I first burned with SolidBurn enabled for Supported Disc it burned it at 4x. Afterwards it would only burn at 2.4x even with the "learned" strategy.

Now I don't know if it is because I started playing with OverBurn that has caused this but I've now deleted the strategy, rebooted my PC and reset SolidBurn for Supported discs and it burned again at 4x. I'm gonna retry the burn when I get home from work and see if it will still burn at 4x or drops down to 2.4x.

Well the 1620 started out as a plus only 16x drive with DL support as the 1600 and look how far it's come. Give em a chance, they have always responeded pretty quickly with updates till the drive is perfected and all new features are added and stable.
I took a chance on my 1600 and now I'll ride the thing on the 1640, I think it'll be pretty awesome soon. It's not too bad now, just solid burn and overspeed needs some twaeking. We all love getting 16x burns outa 4/8x media so now we're all a bit spoiled when it doesn't work

You have to burn the media at over its rated speed then find out whether you happy with it. Burning at rated media speed is not a problem, the difficulty surfaces when you try to activate overspeed function and burn the 8X rated media at 16X.

Ok here's my results using TY T02(rated @8x) and DVDDecrypter to burn.

BSJB firmware,no OverSpeed or SolidBurn,@8x:

BSKB firmware,OverSpeed and SolidBurn enabled,@12x:

Conclusion:definate improvement using the newer firmware with OverSpeed and SolidBurn enabled.
BTW...those PIF spikes are weird,it must be the media.

Not all minus seems to have the problem, my ritek G04 and 5 do 12 to 16x also, but my Maxell and CMC do 2.4 with it all enabled.
