NEC and its future in the ODD business

Postby yuki chan on Fri Aug 12, 2005 1:18 am

The news that has been posted about the OEM facilitation with lite-on and NEC has me a little worried. NEC is one of my favorite companies when it comes to ODD as the drive they manufacture themselves are of an incredibly high quality. I hope as Ian said it will only be for their desktop manufacturing division. If NEC does decided to have ODD manufactured by them it will be a large loss. Personally my opinion is that NEC drives are far superior in build quality than lite-on. (especially when it come to the optics and sled mechanism components) Though this could be good for lite-on as NEC may allow them to use NEC chipsets. I am really not a fan of the mediatek chipsets in lite-ons drives, the stepper controller and sled controller seem to be very sub par.

So what do you guys think will happen?
