How to Firmware update Asus E616P2?

Postby DennisHag on Thu Nov 25, 2004 12:50 am

Need help on updating the firware on an Asus E616P2. I have downloaded the .exe file from Asus but when I run the program I get this error: "Drive name does not match"

Thanks in advance for any help.

Exactly the same thing here. "Drive name does not match" I just got the drive. It came with the 1.03 firmware and I tried to flash to 1.04. Same error message. Just starting to look into the problem.

Received a reply from ASUS:

"Dear Custom :
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Penny and I would be assisting you today.

Before you update to firmware v1.04, please make sure the device is the master and only device connecting to the IDE cable, and it works in PIO mode(you could change it in device manager) and the system didn't install any virtual CD-ROM software.
Please enter our website and download the firmware again:
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download ... ype=Latest"

I tried this and it didn't work for me.

I bought my drive from NewEgg as an OEM. The name ASUS doesn't show up on the drive anywhere, nor in Device Manager. It is listed as a DVD E616P2, and not as an ASUS DVD E616P2 which is what I think the firmware is looking for. I've changed the device name on an older drive with a hacked firmware upgrade, but it involves using a hex editor which I haven't done in years.

Pls PM me, or post back here if you find a fix. I'll do the same.

Thanks, I was just getting ready to start a thread also.

Well, this seems like the thread to bump for my problem as well. I'm having the exact same problem with my Asus DVD-E616P3 drive. Asus is left off the drive name and it is a slave to the Lite-On DVD-ROM drive and this will not be changed even for a moment. If it doesn't flash as a slave in DMA mode, then it will never be flashed. To set the Region code, media had to actually be in the drive (not with both my Lite-On drives). Presently, I'm running the 1.05 firmware that came with the drive. I was thinking of changing the name of the drive and adding the name Asus at the beginning, but I'm not sure how to do this (in registry?). Anyone have a solution to this problem that works? :-?

The retail Asus flashers won't allow you the flash the OEM versions. Because this limitation is programmed into the flasher itself, the only way around this is the hack the flasher. TDB has a hacked flasher for the E616P2, but they have not made one for the E616P3. Until someone modifies the E616P3 flasher, OEM->Retail for the P3 will not be possible.

I registered for The Firmware Page forums last night and requested firmware for this drive. We'll wait and see what happens.........(Jeopardy theme runs through my head).;)

I requested the P3 firmware at the Firmware Page, but it seems to be down all weekend. Anyone know how long they usually take after a request? Is it by order of request or do a bunch of people have to request something before they will do it?
