Kidding aside, it sounds to me like someone who wanted a free ride for the rest of his life.

C'mon, the guy is a methane power plant operator, and he did not know that what he was doing could be dangerous? You can't just wait till after you take a dump to have your cig?

Yeah, it sounds like Jenkins found a hungry lawyer and their going to try to retire on the accident. Jenkins has to be covered by workers compensation by law... And, just guessing, he's probably a union employee with a decent injury package.

If the lawyer gets half of the 10 million and Jenkins lives until he's 80 years old that equals about 185k per year for Jenkins not counting interest earned. It's a heck of a lot more than I would award for an accident.
