Any Suggestions? - NERO burning problems (Arrggh!)

Postby hoiwei on Wed Apr 06, 2005 8:51 pm

Hi,

I'm sure this is a common problem with Nero 6 but I'm a relatively new user of Nero 6.

Recently I upgraded my CDRW to a LG GSA 4163 DVD-RAM (Firmware A102)

The rest of my specs are as follows:

Athlon 700mhz
640Mb RAM (CAS 2)
Pioneer DVD 115F (as slave on the same IDE as the LG)
Samsung SP0802N HDD

Windows 98 SE
Nero Suite 3 Patched to latest version 6.6.0.8

Right there has been several problem which has driven me insane. I had Nero 5 on the Teac CDRW and it was relatively troublefree.

Firstly, I haven't been able to record any audio CDs (only once out of 50 odd times with Nero 6) I've been using a CD-RW disk to test my burns and it always seems to burn successfully EXCEPT that when I check it the CD is blank (i.e. no files appear) HOWEVER, if I check the amount of space left on the CD it shows the CD has some files using some space. I thought it was the DVD writer but having used Cyberlink Power2Go 2 Audio CDs have been burning perfectly all the time. I have tried numerous disks such as TDK & Memorex.

Secondly, I have not been able to us the 'copy' feature as everytime I do a 'Command Sequence Error' occurs. This error seems to always appear when copying anything Disc-At-Once (DAO). Again using Power2Go there are no problems.

Thirdly, I've been trying to copy a Video CD file (DAT file) to try and burn a VCD but again nothing appears on disk after burn but something has taken up disk space.

I have changed the IDE cable as the one I had was an older 40 pin. No difference here.

DMA has been enabled on all devices connected to IDE (Hard disk and Optical Drives)

I have reinstalled Nero 6 about 5 times now, every time using the clean utilities. (As I had Nero 5 previously) I really don't want to reinstall Windows as you know it's a real pan!)

I would be really grateful if anyone has suggestions.
And before anyone mentions upgrading my PC, my specs are more than capable!! :D I'm not burning DVDs (Yet!) but will eventually transfer DV clips.

I'm thinking maybe Nero 6 is not Win 98 compatible? Although backing up Data files and MP3 file, etc is not problems on CD and DVDs and DVD-RAM.

Many thanks!

Have you tried the original version of Nero on the CD?
If so you might try installing the latest NeroASPI:

Thanks, I did try my Nero 5 but does not have DVD burning options and cannot detect the LG writer.

Also I forgot to mention I have updated both system ASPI (from Adaptec) Ver 4.71 and also NERO ASPI (tried both sets) but sticking with the recommeneded Win 98 version Ver 2.0.0.11 as the other set are for Win XP

Cheers

do you have InCD installed as well?
if you're not using it, while don't you uninstall it and see how Nero works.

Please post a copy of your Nero log file from a failed write attempt. Be sure to edit out your serial key first.

This way we can properly assist you without needing to 'guess' at the possible problem. :)

As mentioned in my OP, the CD burns 'successfully'. It just doesn't show any contents when you view what's on the disk. I have attached a log for a data verification error.

Many thanks

I have to admit, I was suspecting that you were writing to the Image Recorder and not the actual recorder, but the log file definately indicates you are writing to the recorder.

But I did notice that DMA is not enabled for your recorder that is connected to your AMDIDE controller, and this is more than likely the cause of your problems. Data could be getting scrambled.

I would recommend resolveing that and see if that resolves your issue of creating unreadable disc.

I would be interested to know what Nero's 'Disc Info' reports about the disc's you've created. If it reports as blank, or as a session on the disc.

Craig

Thanks for the analysis CCampbell.

Yes the DMA doesn't seem to be enabled in Nero, but for the AMD IDE drivers it automatically enables DMA on connected devices. Another test shows it as DMA enabled (from the Cyberlink diagnostic test for Power2Go)

The settings are not available directly under the devices in properties - which led me to read up about why it doesn't show and have found out that the AMD IDE drivers I'm using (latest ones) automatically enables DMA.

I will run a Nero Disk Info report later and will let you know the outcome.

Many thanks

Hi Hoiwei,

Could you launch Nero Express and go to More->Disc Info and see if it reports the session, and see if in the bottom left of the window you get to buttons that say 'Close Session' and 'Close Disc'?

If you do, choose the 'Close Disc' option and see if you are then able to read and/or play the disc.

You should not get these options as your log file shows a succesful closure of the disc, but I wish to make sure.

Hi CCampbell

I have tried recording a wave file onto a CR-RW. It says it was successful and completed as usual. I done as you instructed and I have attached what came up.

It stills shows up as a blank disk although 34mb has been used. The disk has been labeled as 'Cd' even though I have left it blank.

Many thanks

Hi Hoiwei,

Sorry for the lack of response on my end. Its been very busy getting ready for the NAB show, and I'm still in Vegas at our booth so I can not do any real tests.

But before I left, I did manage to obtain your same model Recorder and could not duplicate the issue. I don't suppose you have another recorder, or another system you can test on?

I wish I could provide something more constructive, but I'm running out of possible causes or solutions
:(
