Thoughts on new drive...

I just upgraded from my horrible HP 530i to a
Memorex 16X Dual Format Double-Layer DVD Recorder

What are your thoughts on this drive. For me it burns fantastics and I haven't burned a coaster yet. The media I use is TDK (use to use Memorex) and my burning suite is Nero 6.6 which came with the drive. The price of the software alone is worth the $69 I paid for the drive.

Good choice! You should be very happy, especially if you have the rebadged NEC3520 drive.

Actually I think it is the rebaged NEC drive becaus when I upgraded the firmware it said "Nec hardware updating, please wait" (or something along those lines)

Just bought me a stock of Fuji color CD-rs and Fuji DVD+R's made in japan. Both are TY. Wish I would have discovered this forum before a burned over half my stack of TDK's! Let's go see how these baby's do!

hmm theres an update that memorex released for the rebadged nec, but yet nec doesn't have any firmware updates for this drive

NEC doesn't update there drives nearly as much as others

Man these fuji's are great.

However they are rated at 40x but my nero software automatically sets the max writing speed at 32x (my drive can do 48x). Why is it doing this?

media only goes as fast as the drive allows

Well the drive allows for 48x writing, but the software is limiting to only 32x. I've tried other cd-r's (my old tdk's) and they default to 48x. I'm sure I'm better quality burns, but the discs don't seem to be rated properly.

No, the drive is limiting the writing speed to 32x.. not the software. Always remember that even if the media is rated at whatever, that doesn't mean your drive will actually write to it at that speed. This goes for CD's and DVD's.

He could of buy the same drive (NEC3520) from Newegg.com for $55 shipped instead of paying $100 for it.
