14 die in US oil refinery blast: gasoline prices going up?

Postby Spazmogen on Wed Mar 23, 2005 11:21 pm

CNN ARTICLE

Sounds like quite an explosion. I wonder if it was a BLEVE
I feel sorry for the family members of the victims.

14 dead so far. It will climb. Of that, I have no doubt.

Those of you around in 1979, may have heard of the Mississauga Train Derailment.. It was a multiple BLEVE.

This was America's 3rd largest refinery, now out of commission.
Will it drive up the price of fuel this summer?

From what I heard, that refinery handles only 10% (or was it 3%?) of the country's oil. It shouldn't have much of an effect, but you know how gas companies are. They look for any excuse to jack up prices.

Even at nearly $2/gallon, we, as Americans, should consider ourselves lucky. Isn't gasoline in Canada, Europe, and just about every other place on earth much more than The States?

Yeah, I just worked it out.

Locally, it's 84.9 cents per litre in CDN $. 87 Octane.

That works out to about $2.70 US per US Gallon.

i pay 5.07 NIS per liter of 95 octane unleaded gasoline.
this is roughly US$1.17 per liter = US$4.43/gallon.

how's that compared with US prices ???

I've been expecting a new round of comparisons, at the latest after Ian's remark.

The price is mostly taxes, but the gas companies get their pound of flesh too.

The local filling station just upped the price for regular (91 octane) to 1.18 €/liter (premium/95 is 2 cents more)- it's been above 1.10 for the past month. At 1.30€/US$ this works out to US$1.53/liter or US$5.80 /US gallon.

dodec- I bet you're surprised that you're not on the top of heap on this one...

It's even more expensive in the UK, which I believe is one of the most expensive in the world for fuel due to the high taxes (I think the only more expensive countries are in Scandinavia).

I pay between $1.49 and $1.63 per litre of 91-octane fuel (as MediumRare says premium (95 octane) is around 5-10 US cents more), which is $5.64 to $6.20 per US gallon, and up to $6.57 for the premium stuff.

If it goes up any more there's likely to be a repetition of the 2000 UK fuel protests right at the time of a general election, with the very real possibility of Tony Blair being voted out of power as a direct result. This explosion couldn't have come at a worse time for Blair :o

Some spokesman was on GMA this morning and he said that it was only one unit of a huge refinery and it would have little impact on the overall capacity. So no, this won't matter too much. But you never know what they'll say when gas hits $3/gallon next week.

yeah!
in fact, i was so flabbergasted, i had a difficult time lifting myself off the floor.
(i still think Israel is more expensive, if you factor in the average wages. i.e. relative cost of living).

i sure hope our dear Minister of Treasurey, Binyamin Netanyahu (commonly known as Bibi) isn't browsing CDRLabs forums. if he is, i'm sure another price hike on gasoline will happen real soon #-o

$2.09 for a gallon of Standard Unleaded up here, it was only like $1.95 for a gallon just last week, or 2 weeks ago tops.
