NERO caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module SHELL32.DLL

Postby Ulysses on Mon Jan 31, 2005 7:54 am

HI!

Currently running Nero 6.6.0.3 on Win98SE.

Sometimes at random whenever i try to select files to add to my compilation (both Data and Audio cd), Nero crashes with a generic Nero Internal Error and i receive the following error message:

NERO caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module SHELL32.DLL at 0187:7fccc6f9

It happens when I try to select a new directory in the File Browser
window. No problem running Nero Express: it does always work fine!

I uninstalled/reinstalled the program (using Nero Clean Tools) w/o any success...NO other burning software is on my system (some time ago i uninstalled both CloneCd and BlindWrite, just in case...btw i use to shut down all other programs when running Nero).

Rebooting the pc usually solves the problem, and things work normally for a while, then it happens again. :(

Would appreciate any help or advice. TIA

Can you provide a printout of what Nero InfoTool finds on your system? THis may help us see what may be causing the issue.

Does your system show any other symptoms or problems? Not related to Burning, and maybe only occurs once in a great while? Do you have the latest drivers for your IDE Controller?

Craig, thx so much for posting back... :)

My system is out-of-date (about 6 years old) but very stable...BSODs are very very rare and usually i can track down the specific prog that caused them...

Do you have the latest drivers for your IDE Controller?
sorry, no idea about this...

Hi Ulysses,

I do not see any problem with your setup, or with any of the drivers you have on your system.

Do you have any programs running in the background when you try and launch Nero Burning ROM?

Have you tried upgrading to Nero 6.6.0.6 from our website to see if this inadvertanly resolves your issue? (Keep Nero 6.6.0.3 handy in case you wish to remove Nero 6.6.0.6 and go back to Nero 6.6.0.3)

Did you or do you have any other CD Recording programs installed on your system? (I do not see any drivers from other recording program, so I doubt this is the case, but I need to be sure. :) )

And you say this only occurs with Nero Burning ROM, but not with Nero Express, right? What happens if you launch Nero Express, and then click on the NERO button in bottom of the window and go to the Nero Burning ROM interface? Do you still have this error using this process of launcing Nero Burning ROM interface?

unfortunately the problem happens since version 5.5.9.9: every time i upgraded hoping to solve this nuisance w/o any luck...sounds as i should DOWNGRADE to old version to get rid of it... :(

And you say this only occurs with Nero Burning ROM, but not with Nero Express, right? What happens if you launch Nero Express, and then click on the NERO button in bottom of the window and go to the Nero Burning ROM interface? i'll give this workaround a try asap... :-k

well, no crashes using this unusual procedure indeed (till now at least...) =D>

now i 've just to wait a few days/weeks and see! [-o<

Hmm, strange.

To be honest, I was kinda hoping it would still fail, so it would at least be consistant and give me an idea as to what the problem might be. :(

Well, lets see how it goes over the next week, and let me know if this 'process' starts to fail as well.

Do you have another computer you can test on, so we can see if this issue only occurs on the one system?

I think we shared (till recently!!) the same problem.

Two years ago, when I had Nero 5.5 [with Win98SE] then at random it silently sent me to desktop with no error messages!! I updated Nero several times but nothing did any help.
At some point I re-installed Win98SE (ran Setup through Windows and installed over some applications that needed it) and the problem ceased to exist.
I now use Nero 6.6.0.6 [again with Win98SE] and the symptoms are exactly the same with those you describe ("NERO caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module SHELL32.DLL",etc again at random).
This problem appeared after I installed again Agnitum Tauscan 1.6 Build 0723 (the same Trial version which I had used with Nero 5.5 two years ago -I couldn't think then that these two things were connected-).
I decided, after some experimenting, to un-install Tauscan and the problem dissappeared once and for all !!!!!
If you need Tauscan, try to only delete the registry values (with caution!!!) for the shell extensions of the program [=the ability to to be able with right-click to scan selected items with Tauscan] -which is what caused the problem-. If you don't, then simply un-install it!!
In a forum someone who had the problem which I initially had said that updating Window Washer from 4.1 to 4.5 did the trick.
Maybe this could help you also.

@ Seth_4788

very interesting post...thx so much for trying to help! :)

i've Agnitum Tauscan 1.7 Build 1414 running on my machine indeed...i like this app but i'll try now to remove the program's shell extension [using jv16 PowerTools] or i'll uninstall it completely just to see if this could solve that Nero problem for me too...(btw i uninstalled Webroots Window Washer about 2 years ago).

i'll post results here asap.

P.S
CCampbell's opinion about this subject is welcome of course...

sorry for off-topic, but what's Agnitum Tauscan ?

I've not seen this issue before, so anything is suspect at this point. :)

I would be very interested to find out if that Anti-Virus program is the 'conflict' with our software causing this symptom.

Once we know for sure, we can obtain this software to find a work around on our end, or to contact the developer in the hopes we can work together to resolve the issue.

FINAL REPORT!

NO MORE CRASHES since February 22, so TAUSCAN was the only culprit indeed...!

THANKS again to Seth_4788 who helped to solve this issue... =D>

I'm glad I could helped you.
It was quite an irritating issue.

I just can't be believe my ears when friends of mine tell me that they do a format every now and then!!!
It's one thing I've learn by now; the solution of reformatting your HD (and reinstalling the operating system, etc) can be avoided all the time.

I'm sure the Internet community can help solve ANY Windows problem !!!!
