How do use your DVD Burner?

Since I've only used my DVD burner for data backup, I was wondering how much I'm in the miniority.

I think you're missing some shades of grey -- how about authoring home movies? Or recording (via some capture device) TV shows? Or music MP3/WAV/AAC/OGG files on one big disc?

Just some ideas. I use my DVD burner for lots of stuff...

I'll burn the occasional data that isn't pirated or copied... wait even the data on there isn't mine

like windows cd/dvd images, xbox games, movies

damn I don't think ive ever burned anything at all that wasn't a backup, pirated or non legitamate

Well, if we can all be honest with ourselves, owning a CD/DVD burner usually (I'd bet around 90%) involves some form of software piracy...

Then I must be in the 10% of the non-piracy group. After having seen what my 3 year old grandson did with a movie DVD that was legally purchased, I decided to back up his movies in case he destroyed another one.

I do not make multiple copies of "Milo and Otis", "Homeward Bound", "Shrek", etc., and sell them out of the back of my Jeep in the Wal*Mart parking lot.

I burn DVDRs with useless random data, compiled automatically by Nero CD/DVD Speed. The discs are then tested, and either stored for later testing, or thrown out to save space in my room, to make room for more DVDRs.

I burn the VERY occasional DVD Movie backup, or disc with backup data on it... but 99% of my discs are garbage data.

1. 94 lincoln mark 8 is an old fart's car that you can put 4 sets of golf clubs in the trunk and take 3 of your overweight, old fart buddies golfing.

I use mine for making DVDs of the Wiggles, Dora, and Barney for my 2.5 year old. I also make legit backups of DVDs so she doesn't scratch them to heck. She also happens to love Stomp. She loves the grouchy kitchen guy. Arrr, Arr, Arr. You have to see it. Stomp Out Loud.

Using Nero Back it up right now.

I used to use Ghost, I still have it, but I just wanted to try something different.

Please! For your sake, perform a test and make sure you can restore your data onto a new, blank hard drive. I've seen too many people be burned by backup software that they thought was protecting them, but whose restore function they never tested before they needed it. Then when they did need the restore function they found out it either didn't work at all or didn't work in the way they thought it would. At least two people have reported this problem with Nero's backup right here at CDRLabs.

Now, I am not bashing Nero in particular. Any backup strategy that hasn't been tested for its ability to properly restore the data is almost as bad as no backup at all. But I do have one beef with Nero's backup, and that is that there is no tool that will allow you to break open the backup and restore individual files if you use the full-disc backup option and it fails to restore the complete disc image. Nero really should let you restore individual data files from a full-disc backup even if something goes wrong and you can't restore the entire image onto a new hard drive.

Backup strategies aren't something to just change for the sake of trying something new, unless you really don't need to protect the data you are backing up anyway.

Yeah it works fine. The machine boots right to the first DVD and sees everything. I used the complete Partition backup option.
