Interesting about 32 bits apps actually running slower; you would think
they would design the 64 bit OS to ensure that if a 32 bit-based app is run 64-bit Windows would act in a 32 bit mode (that they could have built in at design time).
Then again I don't know the technical specifications.

In any case, I think it will be long time before a reasonable number of 64 bit apps come out.
Software manufacturers aren't going to spend their development budgets on something that there will be a limited demand for (initially) due to lack of PCs with the 64-bit OS installed.
If they are given incentives (by Microsoft) things might be different.

they design the chip so that it can run 32 bit applications. but then it's primarily a 64 bit chip. so adding the functionality of 32 bit compatiblity onto the 64 bit structure is an addendum and requires extra effort.
so it's really not surprising at all.

put another way - if they designed the chip so that running at 32 bit wouldn't be slower than a native 32 bit chip, well the price would come from somewhere else.
either poorer 64 bit performance - and nobody wants that!
or bigger chip for more hardware in it - making it more expensive, perhaps hotter etc. etc.

Ok, now that I know what a bit is you'd think that someone with 64 bits would run slower than someone with 32 bits.

For example, Longhorn won't be exclusively 64-bit; there will also be a 32-bit version. "The 16-to-32-bit change took a good ten years," muses Tom Halfhill, senior analyst at Microprocessor Report. "You have to think it's going to take another five years before [64-bit computing] is ubiquitous."

So it will be a while before 64 bit goes mainstream.

Just be thankful this version of XP isn't all 64 bit. The one for Itanium is.. and it lacks a lot of features (CD burning, etc) because they are 32 bit.

AFIAK, the RC1 build has been out for some time now. All the announcements were for the RC2 build, which apparently is available to developers and subscribers, but is not on MS's site for public beta testing at this point.

The RC1 build is 1289 I believe, the RC2 build is 1433. That's the build I'm waiting to try.

One has system requirements with a continue button.
I press continue and go to a page that says my basket is empty.
I click on the link "Browse the catalog and add a product." and am sent to a page that says product unavailable and under that is a link that says "Download Version" which I click and go back to the first page.

I enable cookies for microsoft.com.

I got the .iso and burned it with the CD Key that MS provided in their e-mail. Ultra ISO is a wonderful program for adding stuff (like CD Keys) to the original ISO before you burn it.

Perhaps one day I'll upgrade to a processor that can run it.

My P3 1ghz is not up to it.

RC2 (Build 1433) is now out, at the same link as RC1 was at. Should be a better release with more support. I already have it downloaded, but won't be installing it until I can devote a separate partition for it.

At any rate, MS is supposed to allow 32-bit client licensees to convert to 64-bit licenses on a 1-for-1 basis at no charge, from what I've heard. So if you already have XP-32, you can get 64 when it ships if you need it. There is an expiration date on all release candidates; most MS demos or RC's I've seen have either 120 or 360 days.
