DVD Compatible capture MPEG2 settings ?

Does anyone know what the settings are that Nero Vision Express renders MPEG2 files to for DVDs ? I have captured files as MPEG2 (720 x 480, 6000kbps VBR, sound: 48kHz, 128kbps) in Pinnicle 9. I don't really care for the Nero video capturing yet, although it has gotten better with the last release. I'd like to capture in the exact format that Nero is looking for so that when I create the DVD, the rendering time is minimal.

Yes, I know its best not to capture to a compressed format, but these are VHS-C camcorder tapes, so I'm not losing much. It just saves a ton of rendering time.

I dunno', SA. I just loaded Pinnacle 8 about an hour ago for the first time, myself. Got tired of fooling with it after 15 min so I'm trying something else in NVE.

I am thinking it needs to be at LEAST 192kbps for the audio. Are you capturing AC3 or MPEG-2 audio? MPEG-2 isn't a US standard (it is a PAL standard format, though..) so many authoring programs insist on rendering video with MPEG2 audio no matter what.

I am trying to record TV from the cable (no, not Jerry Springer). The capture was in MPEG2 which I then wanted to burn. It is a nightmare. I overlooked the option to record to hard drive in AVI format, I think Nero can deal with that easily.

You are not doing exactly what I'm doing, but it may be close enough that this might help.

I am capturing MPEG2 audio, but changing that isn't an option. If it was only the audio that needed to be rerendered, I don't think that would take long. But I think the video doesn't quite match what Nero is looking for, so it rerendering. If I could capture in the exact format the Nero was looking for, that would drop the DVD creation time quite a bit. Rendering 2hrs of video isn't a speedy process. I usually start it, then go to bed.

By the way, these video files were eating up my hard drive so I picked up a new 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax Ultra ATA 7200RPM, 8MB cache drive today at CompUSA for $60. I feel like I stole something. It's not the most perfect drive. But for $60, it'll do. It's in the flier this week.

NVE has a "Smart Encoding" mode (one of the "Video Options" settings). In the Smart Encoding mode video and audio that is DVD compliant will not be re-encoded.

I'm sure that your video is compliant. I'm not so sure about your audio. I normally record at 48KHz 384bps.

It might be worth trying the Smart Encoding mode to see it it works. I believe this mode is off by default.
