They (NEC drives) all look like that unfortunately.
I agree it is a boring look, not like the DRU-500A.
Pioneer OEM and Pioneer rebadged drives are also nothing special to look at.
The only difference betweenFrom the NEC ND-1100A I had to the 3500A
is one was beige and one is black, other than that the bezel is the same.

Sony and Plextor DVD burners have nice looks, as far as my taste is concerned.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

lol that sucks..im holding off everything for the timebeing..altho it is soo tempting to buy these damn drives..
Ive only got ONE NEC 2500A running on 1.08v3-2 herries firmware..
Allows most dvd's to be copied at 8x (10 mins)...What more would i want :P

Back onto topic..i wonder what brand of DVD+R DL works at 8x and what the relative times are :o

LG is pretty bad too.... but at least NEC has Herrie doing firmware support... for the LG, once the drive is discontinued, you're out of luck! :o

This is true but NEC has released quite a few drives in the past year compared with LG :o

8xSONY DVD+R...

And the 8x SONY(Taiwan Sony Made) burnt 12 speed !
I'm sure I have a NEC 3520A no Plextor :D

I haven't bought a dvd burner yet, but was considering the 3520. How much longer before the 3530 is out?

Yes! Good question! 109 is out and NEC will not be undone for very long. I think the 109 and 3530 are worth the wait.

Well.. if its like the 3520, there was a 2-3 month gap between it showing up on the FCC website and it actually shipping.

Well the rumour I got was that it should be spring befor we see those.
Then again the source of that rumour is not that good.
But still spring gives it enough options to be right.
However there is one thing in line with it.
Some speeds the drive supported are for media that was annnounced for that time to arrive. So in that case the spring time line also has some credit.

But still it's more something like that we'll have to waite and see.

In terms of firmware upgrading, Samsung/Toshiba appear to be the best at adding new speeds without forcing you to upgrade drive so far. For example, the 552B supports 4x DL (used to be 2.4x) and 16x DVD-R (used to be 12x) and 6x -RW (used to be 4x) and 8x +RW (used to be 4x). Sadly, their media compatibility and write quality still isn't as good as Pioneer or LG although it does appear to be very good. Interestingly tho, they released a 552U which started with the new speeds and no one is quite sure what the diff is with the 552B (main rumours, some believe there is none).

P.S. I'm not counting brands like Plextor which are ridiculously expensive.

But by my knowledge, since the 3520A (and upcoming 3540A) use a single chipset now different than the 25xx/3500A, and nobody has been able to crack it to code firmwares for it yet. If you want to play with firmware, you should stick with a 3500A for the time being.
