CD exploded..

Anyone ever had a CD explode in the drive? My daughter was playing a Scrabble game from a CD ROM that she got for Christmas and all of the sudden it let go into two pieces. I fought for an hour trying to get the second half out. Is this common? Defective disc?

BTW the drive is a LiteOn LTR-52327S.

I haven't had one explode on me yet, but having worked in a Service Center I have seen the aftermath a few times. In my experience this is usually due to a defective disk, not the drive.

defective disc incombination with to high rotation speeds on a drive.
(This behaviour is most times spotted with AOpen and Lite On drives.)

Second RJW's reply. Plextor did some reinforcement of their 48x and higher drives because this happened in their testing. High rotation at around 10K RPM can trash a defective disc. I'd report this to game vendor for disc replacement and for possible replacement of the drive if it is damaged.

The drive seems to be OK. It seemed slow afterwards so I tried a few things such as rebooting, deleting it from the device manager, etc. I finally tried system restore on a whim and it is back to normal. BTW this drive cost me a whopping $9.99 after rebate!

there was an article about high speed shattering discs a while back. i remember one of the admins saying something about it

Normally if the media is weak the high speed drives break the media occassionally.Also CD's,if not handled properly,tend to crack from the centre.Such discs when put in a high speed drive,break.
