I need help!!

Postby jalicea77 on Sun Dec 26, 2004 9:06 pm

I'm using DVD shrink 3.2 and Nero to burn dvds. The process of encoding an original DVD w/ DVD shrink takes about 45 mins. to an hour at the most (which I've heard is the average time it takes) and after the encoding is complete it only takes about 15 mins. to burn the DVD using Nero. Now, my problem is when I try to burn a dvd to dvd going straight to Nero it takes over an hour sometimes. Can anyone tell me what the problem is. Thanks.

You are not giving enough information that some one based on that can help you.

Since I don't have all those information, I give you personal opinion
1) What is the brand/model/speed of your DVD writer?
2) What DVD media/media speed is using?
3) What you mean by trying to copy a dvd to dvd, do you mean? are you
Trying to use Nero for fly by to burn (direct DVD burn to DVD)? If you rip a protected DVD0Video with Shrink if the disc is (D/L) usually takes 25-40 minutes depending to the drive you are using for ripping, then takes 7-20 minutes to burn the ripped file to DVD disc depending to the speed of your drive and your DVD midea. Then if you want extra copy, you can either use Nero Burning ROm to burn the previously ripped file to new disc or use the Nero Express to burn on fly, on both cases the tame for the process to finish again depend to the speed of you drive/media.

I have a plextor 16x dvd burner and a 16x dvd rom
the dvd media I've been using is a sony 8x dvd-r

I'm trying to burn dvd to dvd on the fly...for example my friend let me borrow a dvd movie that he burned and when I try to burn dvd to dvd using nero on the fly it takes over an hour. But, when I burn a movie from a ripped movie file that is saved on my hard drive it only takes about 8 mins.

Well, the transefer speed on your DVD reader is far slower than a hard drive. What DVD are you trying to copy on the fly, is it larger than DVD5? If so then it also has to recode on the fly, which I'm not even sure nero can do.

An hour is about right to go from DVD to DVD. It's a lot for a system to extract and burn at once. It also leaves room for errors to occur so I would reccomend not doing DVD to DVD. Save the image to the drive and then burn with nero like you normally would.

Copying DVD-Video(non protected from your friend) should not take more than 15 minutes with your DVD writer, reader and the 8X media you are using.

1) Check to make sure your hard drive, your writer & reader are all in DMA mode.
2) Check to make sure you have atleast 10 GB free space in your hard drive.
3) Go to the windows and try to delete the content of temp directory.
4) Delete everything in your windows XP (if you have) "Prefetch" folder
5) Disable your screensaver and remove your wallpaper
6) Defrag you hard drive if it is necessary
7) Run MSConfig and shut off anything in the startup tab that you have in background. Reboot your computer and try to burn on the fly now and tell us the result.

For DMA setting dodecahedron has instruction and guidance second to none just follow his instruction. For deleting the content of your Temp & Prefetch directories, go to you c:\windows\temp & c:\windows\prefetch directories and delete every thing under these two directories.

@TCAS:
thanks for your kind words.

by the way, is it safe to delete the contents of C:\Windows\prefetch ? i was never sure about that.

jalicea77 wrote:Can you guide me on how to check my DNA settings and my temp directory settings.

hmm...to check your DNA you would need rather sophisticated and very expensive laboratory equipment, and some extensive knowledge of Microbiology

Thanks for all the input. I tried checking my dma settings and device 0 is dma enabled and device 1 was in pio mode, when I tried to change it to dma it appeared as if it was done but it still stuck in pio mode. I also deleted all the unneccessary files in temp dir., etc. Still, no luck. I burned a copy of an encoded movie on the fly w/ nero and it took 45 mins. were my friend says it takes him 8 mins.

You have to some how get rid of PIO mode push the drive in DMA mode, Try the following:

1) Go to Device Manager click on IDE Controller, right lick on the controller that your writer is been installed, then click uninstall, reboot your computer and let the windows install the controller and driver for your writer, check to find out if is in DMA mode if not repeat the same thing 2 or 3 time more. OR:

2) reboot your computer while start counting the memory size press delete and enter the motherboard "BIOS", go to standard BIOS and make sure all the drive mode are in auto or DMA mode.

re-read that FAQ i mentioned before.
at the end of it you'll find this:
dodecahedron wrote:Sometimes Windws XP will not enable DMA, no matter how hard you try. Selecting DMA if available does not work, and you're still stuck in PIO Mode.
If this is the case, read this FAQ:

Ok, the instructions to get all of my settings (hard drive, dvd burner, dvd rom) to DMA mode worked great. My primary IDE properties for device 0 is set at ultra dma mode 5, device 1 says it's not applicable....my secondary IDE properties for device 0 and 1 are both set at ultra dma mode 2. But, I still have the same problem. I tried to burn an encoded, compressed dvd to a blank dvd on the fly and it still took over an hour. Again, my burner burns really fast if I burn a dvd file on my hard drive to a blank dvd (8 minutes) but still no luck on the fly. Any other suggestions. Thanks.

correction to the above:
device 1 in the 2ndary IDE channel was first reset to multi-word dma mode and I thats when I tried to burn on the fly, but then when I rebooted my system it was then set to ultra dma mode 5.....would that of made a difference?

. You are asking some thing that very few people want to consider it, why are you insisting to burn a protected movie disc which %90 is D/L on fly? First you have to use software to rip, encode and perhaps shrink the protected DVD movie in your hard drive and then software to burn that from your hard drive in to your empty disc. If I understood you correctly copying encrypted disc by on fly process is almost impossible

No, I think you misunderstood me, or maybe I misworded it. I am trying to burn a dvd (that is NO LONGER protected, because it has already been through dvd shrink) on the fly using Nero express. It burns fine but the issue is it takes over an hour. If you look at the last email I sent I updated the primary and 2ndary channels to dma mode and this still didn't help the situation. Matter of fact, I'm in the middle of burning a movie (on my other computer, not this one) on the fly and it is only 85% complete and it has already been 45 mins. Again, the movie I am burning on the fly is NOT PROTECTED. Any suggestions on what the problem is? Thanks. By the way, I have over 90 GB of space on my hard drive so I know that can't be the problem.

from my experience in burning on the fly, the read speed has to be able to keep up with the burner speed. make sure your reader speed is at least double of the burner speed. the reader should not be on the same ide as the dvd burner.

in my opinion why burn on the fly when all you need to do is open up explorer to copy and paste to your hard drive then burn with any dvd burning program. if the dvd is not protected then use DVD DECRYPTER to READ ISO MODE then burn with WRITE ISO MODE. in essence burning on the fly one would think it'd be faster but in your case it isn't. i'd suggest you copy to your hard drive then use DVD DECRYPTER to burn or NERO burn instead of NERO EXPRESS. :)

Thanks for your input....

That's makes sense...but I want to avoid having to use up a lot of space on my hard drive if it's not neccessary. My reader and my burner are both 16x but I'm only burning at either 4x or 8x. I just don't know why it is taking me so long to burn dvd to dvd on the fly. I'm using the same process my friend uses to burn on the fly but it only takes him about 15 mins. max to burn on the fly. I've noticed that I'm better off going through dvd shrink all over again and burning from there (even though the disc is no longer protected) because it only takes about 25-30 mins.

By the way, can you break this process down "all you need to do is open up explorer to copy and paste to your hard drive then burn with any dvd burning program." What exactly does this mean?

In this case there would be no problem at all and it should take between 20-35 minutes to do full copy (second copy of the first one) o your disc. If you having problem try to make sure your hard drive is defrag, and may be you need to uninstall and then reinstall the Nero.

Thanks a lot TCAS! I have one more question. I've been told by several people that the dma settings should not be the same for the reader and the burner and when I check my settings they are both set at ultra dma mode 2. Would this slow down the process or should this not make a difference? Thanks.
