Thanks to CD Freaks for finding this. Here's some info on the drive. It's in PDF format.

It seems that 3520 will not use same chips than NEC 3500...

NEC 3500 @ 3520 may be impossible...

NEC sure does love Z-CLV doesn't it? Ugh. At least they could get rid of the 4x zone on 6x and 8x burns...

Seems like a nice upgrade on the 3500. I really find it hard to care very much about a minute or so difference in speed between 16x CAV and 16x Z-CLV for writes, but am much more bothered about getting to finally use DL.

Is there any indication as to when DVD-DL media will be coming out, and whether it's going to be as scarce/expensive as DVD+DL? Unless DVD-DL becomes cheaper than DVD+DL soon, I'll be sticking with my trust old 2510 until we have 6x or 8x DL drives (or ideally until Bluray...).

8x + dl 1qt 2005

i bet nec did not change the chipset, it would be too costly for them to change it unless this is an intrim burner with beta like circuit & firmware for next gen (8x dl), but i doubt that.

though it looks different on the top part; it could be the result of improved spindle mechanism or redesigned circuit to improve heat exchange.

it is likely that 3500->3520 can be done with minor problems

If you don't want to lose money on that bet I suggest you check the block diagram at FCC first...
