Pioneer DVR-109 release date

Postby dolphinius_rex on Fri Nov 19, 2004 12:00 am

I've just received word from one of my contacts who happens to be a Pioneer DVD burner distributor, that the DVR-108 is now being discontinued, and the DVR-109 is slated to be released in January.

I thought people might be interested in that tidbit :wink:

Only if you use the equivalent firmware from their Piodata line and flash it to the DVR-108.

Unless it is blue-ray, Who cares !!!!!

I hope pioneer is not becomming like LG where each new drive released has the most minor of feature improvments.

If the DVR109 only includes DVD-RDL 2X and leaves all other features the same as the DVR108 then why buy the drive ????????

The drive makers are laughing at us. They are effectively selling to us what should be firmware upgrades as new drives.

This entices the Hoxlands of the world to buy a new drive ( latest and the best with very little improvement ) when Pioneer should have just made a firmware update.

Now if they are getting the +RW and -RW speed past 4X, lets say to 8X and more importantly are getting the +RDL and -RDL up to 8X, and are adding +RWDL and -RWDL, then we would be talking about something useful to upgrade to. Dont hold your breath though, I have probably just listed the specs of the DVR110 DVR111 DVR112 and who knows how many more incarnations.

OK, this is total speculation, but this is what I see the 109 having:

* CAV writing for DVD-R and DVD+R media
* support for DVD-R DL
* 8x DVD+RW writing speeds
* faster CD-R writing speeds

I'm sure it won't have the 2x dl speed upgrade... Also i'm very curious to see tests of this drive... the same way i'm very curious to see if plxetor can fix 716... I'm sure these 2 drives will be top drives... (when it come to the plexor one i'm not that sure... i'm just hoping ... looool) #-o

faster CD-R writing speeds - well it's about time! #-o

how about DVD-RW ? 6x like the LG 4163 or maybe they got to 8x ?

I *DON'T* know, but this is what I expect"

DVD-R: 16x CAV
DVD+R: 16x CAV
DVD-RWs: 6x CLV
DVD+RW: 8x Z-CLV (Maybe CAV?)
DVD-R9: 4x CLV
DVD+R9: 4x CLV (maybe 8x?)

CD-R: 40x CAV
CD-RW: 24x Z-CLV (Maybe CAV)

Still trying to get this nailed down though :wink:

They do it because they can do it, not because it is useful for someone. Like some people take their neighbours to court because the dog is barking too much. The general term we use for this is "Wessie"

I know that Pioneer is very problematic about leaked information. That's why I never would post the complete data in the open.

Let me say this some of the guesses that put up here are quite right. And that's all I say about it.

Well, those numbers I posted were complete guesses, based off the Plextor drive, and what I think Pioneer would need to put out to make people interested in buying the DVR-109 to replace a DVR-108. My contact who gave me the release date was unable to pin anything down for me, because his Pioneer rep wouldn't tell him either! :lol:

If I guessed right, and I'm sure I'm at least close, then it's just because I'm getting a good eye for Pioneer drives :wink:

Well thank heavens I ordered a 108 a few days ago, because if I had read this about the 109, I would have waited for it to be released and then would have waited until I read a variety of reviews, and it would be MONTHS that I would have wasted in making a decision, when I needed to buy a burner months ago! Nothing would have been easier than to put of this descision for yet another few months!

from my dell buddy, 109 was supposed to be released on late dec in japan & d_rex is right on the spec part except cdr speed. as far as he knows, there wouldn't be any speed up from 24x cdr

btw, pio is hoping to bring out 4x - dl, but 109 might end up with 2x. 2x -dl was supposed to be supported by 108, but pio had tech problems.

8x dl won't apear until late april 2005 due to media problems. even 4x dl wouldn't be available until late may 2005....according to my buddy @ dell
believe it or not ;)

I think you buddy at Dell may not be quite right on the media part... however I don't expect many people know who is working on it, and who isn't. And who might just be working on it even more behind the scenes then the others! (at least 3 companies for sure so far!). I'm not able to say who they are, but it shouldn't be TOO hard to figure out one or two of them :wink:

I'm guessing the Pioneer 109 is out really really soon?
I was planning on buying the 108 drive and most places have jacked up the prices or are no longer listing it. ie. canada computers.

It'll be out probably late January in the US... maybe early February. It'll be out here in Canada shortly afterwards I expect.
