inserting media causes machine to reboot?

I have a dell 4600 with an NEC 3500 drive. When the computer is in standby, and I bring it out of standby, THEN insert any media into the drive, the computer freezes then reboots.

any ideas?

This has always been standard behaviour for me with InCD installed, goes away when I remove it.
It's possible that standby is the real issue for you. Since there's no real purpose for standby on a desktop system, suggest not using it. Powering down the processor is a risky thing to do, stability-wise. Just set your system to shut off the monitor and leave the rest running. Powering down the HD is debatable, whether it saves anything or not.

it seems it's not just inserting a cd, but accessing the drive after standby. While I see your points, I also like to create less heat it my office (4 machines burning all day) and quick resume from standby sure beats waiting for boot for a machine I use a few times during the day.

I made sure the machine has the latest bios. I upgraded the 3500 to 217 firmware...and still happens.

It's a software or driver issue, probably software. Your bluescreen message might point to the offending file.

I decided to check the jumpers on the drive. It's the only item on the second ide branch, and was set to cable select (which you would think would work fine).

after changing it to master, it appears it comes out of standby just fine and works as it should.

Don't be surprised if you find out that your system ( Windows/System & Registry) have been inffected by spyware and ad-ware. Try to run program for removing any of these viruses may be that would help.
