Samsung 160 SATA HDD

Do any of you know the country of this HDD's production?
Is it in Korea?

I have read a bunch of reviews from newegg.com and other HDD 's forums, seems Samsung and WD receive good feedbacks for their 120 GB or above SATA HDDs.

Feel free to give me advice in picking these HDDs (or other brands)

My system is P4 2.8C, Maxtor 120GB SATA, Intel 865 PERL, 256MB*2 DDR, GeForce 5600FX, NEC 1300A

I anticipate a can of worms being opened with this thread.

You will find, much like with CD-RW drives, each person has their own opinion about which hard drive brand is the best. For me, I recommend either Seagate, Western Digital, or Maxtor. I have never used a Samsung drive, so I cannot comment on them.

Personally, my next HD will be a SATA Hitachi drive. Since Hitachi took over, their drives are 1000X better. I've read a bunch of reviews where they compared similar drives as well as 10K rpm drives, the Hitachi performed right up with the 10K drives. Just my opinions of course, most drives will preform more than adequately. Any drive can fail, I've been very fortunate over the last 12 years not to have a single failure.

Maxtor all the way for every Hard Drive, unless your considering a WD Raptor...those are great!

i have a 160gb pata version. all samsung drives should be made in korea. can't hear it when it's seeking and idling

however not all samsungs are made the same. some are more noisy in idle noise. check here

nothing but maxtor touches my computer and my xbox's, of course again with the exception of the WD Raptors as well

I have had a very good experience with Seagate drives.The good point about Seagate now is that,the drives come with a 5 year warranty.

I like Samsung for a lot of things (monitors, RAM, etc.). That said, hard disks aren't one of them. I've seen too many with heat issues, and enough that failed. I think of them like I think of Kia cars...The warranty is good, but there's a much higher chance you're gonna need it.

I'd pick Western Digital as my hands down first choice (my only choice for my machines). For others, Maxtor and Seagate are reasonable choices. I'll consider Hitachi when they've had more results for long-term reliability.
