Average time to rip and encode

I'm new to the world of DVD ripping and burning. I have a few questions.
I would like to know how long does it usually takes on the average to rip a DVD using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink 3.2 and encoding.

here's my story: Full DVD Copy The Matrix

I wasn't able to use DVD Shrink from the get go for some reason, so I Used DVD Decrypter to rip to the hard drive.
I then opened DVD Shrink (the latest version) and started the compression.
The anylizing process took 14 minutes, not bad.
The Encoding process took 2 hours, I'm not familiar with this software, this is the first time using it.
Does 2 hours seem normal to anybody, or do I have a problem with hardware.
I burned the files using Nero6 @4x (only media I had) and that only took 12.5 minutes.


My current set up:
Windows XP SP2
P4 2.53 533, 512,
1gig PC2700
2x WD800JB
NEC NC3500AG

I have the latest drivers for the IDE channels
DMA is enabled.
I just recently Defragged (both HD's)

Any suggestions or comment would be fabulous.
Or if you need more info.

i am new and i don't know as much as most on this site but it only takes me 2 to 3 mins to analyze and anywhere from 8 to 30 mins to encode depending on a single layer or dual layer dvd.
the sopranos box set took me 35 mins to encode each dvd because i had to compress everything from menu,extras, and movie but that was the longest my burner took. MEATBALLS the movie took less than 2 min to analyze and 9 mins to encode because there were no compression.

i only use dvd shrink to encode and nero to burn the movie

my rip/encode averages 11 minutes, since its considered the same step in dvdshrink its 11 minutes on average total

How come it takes me on the average 2 hours to encode?
I have nothing else running in the back ground.
While I was encoding, I checked out my CPU performance.
It was maxed at 100%

I thought for sure I would yield better times considering my set up.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I can start to troubleshoot?

i guess just make sure your hard drives are defragged, run antivirus software and maybe spyware to see if anything else is running that shouldn't be

It seems much better when I do not have to compress files.
The compression is what is taking the time.

if i compress at all it takes me on average an additional 10-15 minutes when using dvdshrink

although when i burn movies, its always movie only, and if it works no credits either

to get the maximum video quality out of the movie

I was checking out my settings in DVD Shrink preferences.
I checked the box that enables overlapping I/O
and in the Back upDVD box, under quality settings,
I unchecked perform deep analysis and high quality adaptive error compensation.
Doing these steps knocked a hour and a half off my total elapsed time to complete analyzing and encoding.

Are you achieving your process time with the same settings?

I then burned the disc, and could hardly notice any difference in viewing quality.

Maybe I will leave these settings as they are.

actually wow, my settings were off, there off by default ill try to rip a movie with that i/o overlap on to see if i can get faster

so no i was ripping with just defaulted settings in the preferences

under the quality settings
Do you have perform deep analysis checked, and compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation checked?

That's why it was taking so long for me.

I unchecked those and my time is more like yours.

And has anybody checked there processors performance while a rip is in session?
I did, when it is compressing files and encoding, my processor is maxed out. 100%
Is this normal.

no i never use deep analysis or the compensation setting

Here are my times, I've itemized them into sections as the total time can vary depending on what options you enable:

20min Encoding
18min Deep Analysis (recommended)
1hr + AEC option (does improve pq, but takes alot of time)

I usually do mine with the Deep Analysis, so this puts my total time at around 38min.
