Yoav Ben Tzruya. literally means: Yoav son of Tzruya (i belive Tzruya was Yoav's mother. Ben means 'son of', usually followed by the father's name, this case is an exception).
he was King David's Warlord (= General of David's armies, his Chief of Staffs). if i recall correctly, his mother Tzruya was David's sister.
now that i think of it...not that it was any consideration at all when choosing the name, but
my first name is that of a friend of Kind David too
so Yoav is a good choice in the historical sense too
