ive been using zone alarm on a trial basis, and it seems very gd, only $19.99. the trial ran out 3 days ago, in that time, my pc has already got a virus or sumthin, cause every1 now and then, internet explorer just closes. if any1 could shred some light on that, id be grateful(wot it is, how to get rid of it)

yer, back to the topic, i was wondering wot firewalls u guys recommend.

ZoneAlarm Pro (I'm still on 4.5.594, because version 5 has just too many bugs) works fine for me.

To fix your IE problem, install Ad-Aware SE (Personal edition is free) to get rid of spyware...

I prefer SpyBot Search & Destroy. It's also a freeware. The "Immunize" feature is great for stopping various malecious activities dead in its track. It even prevents changes to the registry, unless you allow the change.

Now, some of the spywares that you may have picked up are persistant, and Spybot (or Adaware - both are excellent programs) will not be able to remove. So, get CWhredder as well. It's a little program, and the only one that I know which will remove these pesky buggers. Oh, I believe that you can download all of these programs from www.download.com.

Depending on how well you understand how network connections work, I would recommend 8signs firewall (previously known as conseal firewall, also known as visnetic firewall). It allows you extreme control over what you allow in and out of your computer using port, ip, and protocol rules. It also does application based filtering, but I find that annoying to get working quickly as there are so many processes that require access past your local subnet.

If you aren't that familiar; I would recommend kerio personal instead of zonealarm. Its quick to setup and still has high flexibility.
