The return of Kodak recordable media!!

I've only seen it one place, but it looks legitimate. From what people have told me, it is made in India, so most likely made by MBIL. Here's some links:

I'm sorry to say that is about all I know about them. I'll see about getting some, but they aren't sold locally in my area, and I'm really not keen on ordering things online. But we'll see, sometimes exceptions need to be made

I'm exactly the opposite, I buy everything online, but sometimes an exception needs to be made and buy it in the store.

Why not buy online, the price will be lower 99% of the time, and it's delivered right to you.

I just prefer the "hands on approach" with things... it's my personal preference. I like to know my suppliers, and I like to know who to give hell to when I don't get what I expect. When you know your sales rep, and try to use the same one everytime, you build a relationship with them, and if they eventually learn that false advertising to you gets them reprimanded by the boss.... eventually they learn that you aren't one of the regular customers that can be screwed over. The sooner my suppliers learn I know more about the products they sell then they do, the sooner they learn to cut the crap when I talk to them!

Or, just go to a place where you don't have to communicate with an incompetent employee, the internet! There's 1 store here where they have good employees (Micro Center) and the best employee quit like a year or so ago.

No offense intended Hoxlund, sadly there are very few sales reps out there as highly educated as yourself. Chances are your company doesn't even give you credit for it either, do they? That has always seemed to be the norm for me at least.

Anyways, isn't anyone else a little shocked to see Kodak brand DVDRs?

And as for ordering online, I'm not really keen on buying anything from the US... I live in Canada. Whatever an item costs in US dollars, I end up paying that amount times 2.0 to 2.2 in Canadian dollars, after shipping, exchange, duties, etc.

I feel your pain man!! Luckily Aviationwiz solves most of my U.S. -> Canada shipping problems

As for the Kodak discs, it's up to you. I'd be very interested in hearing more details about them, and get a Media ID Code off of them! But I'll probably get some myself in the not too distant future (if possible!).

The -R is made in INDIA and the +R is made in TAIWAN. I might buy some +R to see what it is, but I'm not keen on buying Indian made discs...

*shrug*. Your loss. MBI DVD-R and +R discs burn quite well on my 832S. Any reason you don't want to buy India-made discs?

wow.... very VERY weird!!

I have to talk with a friend about this one, he's the only person I know who might be able to get answers on what's up with this media.

I'm not getting an encouraging feeling if there are two batches of this media, and one has a Media001 code. I'm not very sure what's going on if the media says Made in India, and the code says Prodisc either!

All in all, not the worst I ve seen(not the best either)My 25 cake box of +R actually said 8x on the wrapper-MADE IN TAIWAN-burned with Plextor 712 @4x- CLonedvd..

I just ordered 1 25pc cake box of the DVD-Rs and the DVD+Rs each. I'll let people know what they are like when I get them

Should be interesting to see how consistant the media is, and I may even devise some sort of lifespan test for them, to see if they live up to the Kodak reputation

It's nice to see Kodak getting back in the media business. I have some of the branded Gold cd-r's. They have held up quite well through the years.

I also have one spindle of those AT&T cdr's, I still can't figure out why AT&T was getting into the media business.

I'm with Dolph on online buying. I like to know who to complain to when the purchase doesn't work out.

In the corporate world of greed, were only brand (not quality) matters, I'm not surprised somebody decided to take advantage of the Kodak brand again.

Unfortunately, as they are not using anything special on the manufacturing side, I'm afraid this will just end up being another "branded" overpriced version of Prodisc/MBI (whichever turns out to be the manufacturer).

I'd have welcomed Kodak back with open arms had they actually packaged something different under their own brand :)

But yes, I was shocked, but after hindsight it was to be expected :)

I'm not ready to make assumptions on this media yet... remember, with DVDRs, you REALLY can't just bring a product out. If Kodak wants their media to work, they need to have a code that is implemented in all the firmwares of the drives using their media. So a partnership with an established manufacturer makes sense for this. It is also possible, that if Kodak is really serious about bringing back their media, that we will see Kodak codes beginning to be intergrated into firmwares. I'm sure we will see it first with LiteON (and since we can pull these firmwares apart quite easily, we will know quickly!).

So far there are MANY questions left unanswered about this. We have made in India and made in Taiwan products. Some with Prodisc codes, and some with Media001 codes.... none with MBIL codes so far. Results of the media so far have been promising, but only time and considerable professional testing will really show if this media is what its' name's reputation would lead you to expect.

This may be still a very good thing... but it could also be nothing impressive. Only time will tell.
