Any SCSI/ATAPI mmc compliant drive is compatible.

Shredder is correct. I'll add that most all modern CD-RW drives are ATAPI mmc compatible (I haven't personally bought one that isn't), so most any drive should work.

If you have a specific drive in mind you could tell us what it is, and perhaps someone who has actually used that drive can confirm it is compatible.

According to private message I've recieved from you, you have LG CD burner? LG CD burners should work. What software(s) are you trying to use? cdrecord?

Thanks indeed both shredder and cfitz for considering my problem into account.
I have not bought the cd-r/rw yet.i am planning to buy LG CD-R/RW TYPE GCE-8523B in order to use it as reader ,rewriter and writer with Linux red hat 9. I visited the website of LG electronics which is www.lge.com and found out that this model is reader and writer for MS windows but only reader for Linux.
If you guess it will work as a reader and writer with Linux , I will go ahead and buy it but where should i get the driver program which makes it recognizable for Linux. I mean is it recognized by linux directly or i have to get a driver for that.

You shouldn't/don't need any special driver. You sound like new to Linux, perhaps Linux is not for you. RedHat 9 is old and no longer supported. Try Fedora, Mandrake 10 or Knoppix as they are good for novice users.

Shredder is right.RedHat 9 is no longer supported.Also all the linux versions will detect the drive you specified as a reader without any special driver.For burning purpose,you will need some burning software that works under Linux.I think somebody else will explain you in detail.

I KNOW THAT RED HAT 9 IS BIT OLD BUT THAT IS AVAILABLE IN OUR MARKET.FURTHERMORE, I SPENT ALOT OF TIME IN LEARNING IT AND DOWNLOADING IT BESIDE MS WINDOWS XP PROF. ON MY MACHINE.ALL WHAT I NEED IS HOW POSSIBLE IS RED HAT 9 COMPATIBLE WITH LG GCE-8523B CD BURNER AND WHAT DRIVER I DO NEED. I SELECTED THIS LG PRODUCT CAUSE IT IS THE LATEST IN OUR MARKET.IF THERE IS ANY SOURCE OF HELP ,PLEASE BE GENEROUS OTHERWISE I SHOULD FORGET ABOUT THE CD WRITERS.
