Which Internet Security Suite is the best?

Between Zone Alarm (Now has antivirus + firewall integrated) and Norton NIS which one would you choose?

ZoneAlarm.

On the otherhand, if you have Windows XP and have updated to SP2 RC2, you might consider using its included firewall as it is much improved and pair it with McAfee AV.

If you use broadband, a hardware firewall is also highly recommended. I just bought a D-Link DI-604 router at OfficeMax for $10, AMIR, just for this purpose.

Furthermore, very recent advice is to give IE altogether and download and install the free Mozilla 1.7 as your browser for security purposes.

Yes,the firewall in SP2 works better than the previous one.Before that I used NIS.It was also a good software IMO.

The RC2 firewall doesn't block outgoing apps, though, so your system is still possibly vulnerable to any trojans or the like that manage to get onto your system..

I have a trial version of TrendMicro PC-Chilling security suite (AV+Firewall) on my PC. I wanted to use that suite as Antivirus only, disable the firewall part of the suite and install ZoneAlarm as a firewall.

I succeded in disabling PC-chilling firewall, but when trying to install ZoneAlarm ran into trouble. ZoneAlarm installation program complains that I have TrenMicro PC-Chilling software already installed it and I need to uninstalll it first... It probably doesn't know that I disabled the firewall component of PC-Chilling suite.

And such sequence of actions is actually recommnened by PCWorld in their Internet Security Review - they recommended a combination of PC-Chilling AntiVirus (available only as part of the suite) and ZoneAlarm firewall.


I don't know how they've managed to install Zonealarm along with Pc-chilling.

Is that the one that comes with the free MS Security Update cd?

I've been using AVG+Zonealarm (didn't need it for awhile there. Nice to have 'net access again!). Couldn't be happier.
Soon to be proud user of Mandrake 10 (again!). SuSE 9 sucks!

I've tried both and went back to Norton.

I have tested Zone Alarm and NAI before however went back to Norton. The reason I checked the alternatives because, Norton has some serious bloat issues. Installation and loading takes a longer because the size of the app keeps on increasing.

Yes integspec.The installation size increases as you do Live Update.It downloads the new components and also keeps the old.

Pity the only two choices are ZoneAlarm and Norton. :( I choose McAfee VirusScan and Personal Firewall Plus. Never had a problem with either, and the new versions are even easier to use.

I used McAfee VirusScan for some days,but McAfee didnt detect virus under it's nose.It took my whole network down.Believe me I used to update it all the time.I then switched back to Norton,and never have faced a problem due to virus on my network.I had used version 6.Never tried any McAfee software after that.

Yes, McAfee is a strange scanner. It sometimes let's viruses slip under it's nose. It happened to me once long time ago so I switched to Norton. At that time the choices were Dr. Solomons (Anybody remember this?), McAfee or Norton. Only recently I tried McAfee because of the bloat of Norton, however still found it's worth putting up with Norton's install and initialize blues over McAfee's performance issues.

Dr.Solomon's was a great scanner long back.I think some company eventually bought Dr.Solomon's.And I had installed McAfee because Norton was slowing my machine as hell.But after some days I sacrificed some performance for virus free environment by installing Norton again.

Dr. Solomons was bought by McAfee / NAI. Too bad, it was a very robust and an accurate scanner.
