The TDK is a re-badged one, haven't seen it yet under the Lite-On brand name though.

They're readily available in Germany, under 100 Euros retail (not bulk). In fact, I just ordered one. :D

I think emperor got a messed-up drive. He's asking for a replacement now. I've seen a few people burn at 12x okay...

What brand of 8x media will burn at 12x speed on this Liteon burner?

Here's the list of media codes that are officially supported in the stock TS08 firmware:

Code: Select all
MAXELL  /002/00
MCC     /003/00
MCC     /004/00
RICOHJPN/R02/03
SONY    /D11/00
YUDEN000/T02/00

Of these codes, the only ones that I've seen widely available are Ricoh R02 (sold under a variety of brands, including Fuji 8x +R), the T02 code (TY 8x +R), and the MCC003 code (Verbatim 8x +R).

Of course, with a bit of twiddling with the OmniPatcher, you can get it to burn any +R media at 12x (no gaurantees on how the quality of such overspeeding will turn out, of course). ;)

Yeah, it'll be my first DVD burner. I hope the "enjoy" part will come to pass. :o

I chose this one because it uses the new LiteOn layout/chipset (1213S) and hopefully will have some upgrade channels opening up in the future. I don't need DL (not into movies much) and 8x is fast enough for me. So why a 12x drive? Well, if a drive is laid out for 12x, it shouldn't have too many (mechanical) problems at 8x or less. Also I'm frugal (read stingy) and it's cheaper than the 832S or a (gasp) Plextor. (And it's nice to have the option to play around a bit with faster burns ).

Much better media compatibility than the Plextor PX-712a drive when it comes to burning at 12x speed with 8x media. I would love to see a review on this drive.

Good reasoning. I think Zebra over at CDFreaks has one, he seems to be very happy with it.
