Opinions about web browsers

Postby dodecahedron on Wed Jun 09, 2004 7:00 pm

i know this has been discussed a few times before, but still...

i gave FireFox a try a week or so ago, after so many have raved about how it's so great.
what can i say? it so slow !!!

i like some of the stuff there.
the tabbed browsing is nicely done.
download manager and lots of other stuff.
and the plugins! wow what a list.

but it's so sluggish! compared with IE!
i always thought that MS software was bloated and slow. well maybe so but FireFox is considerably more sluggish than IE on my machine at least.

anyone else notice that FireFox is slow?

maybe i should try Mozilla...? :o

gave MyIE2 a shot. saw it at a friend's house.
i quite like it. it's very quick! more than FireFox and more than IE too!
i think in the meantime i'll stick with MyIE2.

miss some things i already got used to in FireFox, but on the whole quite nice.

any other recommendations?
how is Opera? is it faster than FireFox? i seem to recall some people like it very much and say it's the best.

avitionwiz said his FireFox isn't slow.

i've posted about this in another forum but never got any comments about some wrong setting. hmm...

Oh, come on, who deleted our interesting coversation about dodeca starting to loose his mind?

As I said, before I was *RUDELY* deleted, mine isn't slow on any of my 3 computers, and is in fact a lot quicker than IE. I also stated that if you want a good web browser, you have to go out, buy a Mac, and use Safari

I too have started using FireFox 0.8 1.5 months ago! Aside from being a bit slow to open up the broswer as compared with IE (usually when I click IE, it opens up immediately), I really do like the FireFox. Not only does it block certain pop ups w/o. using external software, I seem to be getting FAR LESS spywares installed on my computer after I started using FF! That's a bonus! I am loving it!

definitely!
FireFox is hailed on some Spyware forums i read. much safer than IE.

i wonder how safe MyIE2 is.
is it "built on" IE in some way? or is it a new browser that just immitates IE?

and when i said FireFox is slower, i wasn't referring (just) to it's slow opening up, but to actaully slower loading pages.

Firefox is great, I love the plug-ins (adblock rocks!). However, it's dog-butt slow.

Opera, however, is fast as hell. No ad blocking, though, but a good "hosts" file helps ALOT in that regard. It's my main browser once again, after getting fed up with FireFoxs speed and incompatablities.

EDIT: Firefox RC 0.9 is out.

I like AvantBrowser, but I still default to IE6 with the Google toolbar.

I'll have to try MyIE2...

i might try Avant just to compare it with MyIE2.

i kind of like MyIE2 (except for those little things i got used to in FireFox and i miss now :o :( )

i guess i should really try Opera.
i keep hearing good things about it.

and it's supported by Spybot - Search & Destroy !!! :D

does anyone know of a plug-in (or extension) for IE, MyIE, FireFox or whatever browser that lets you rearrange the items in the context (right-click) menu?
e.g. in IE i hate how the refresh option is all the way at the bottom, i like how it's near the top in FireFox.
i wish i could rearrange the order of the items to my liking.

I think that's a good idea. :D

I've been using Opera for about a year (initially on a Pentium 133 with 64 MiB) and have found it much more responsive than IE. My main reason for going with Opera, though, was security- just too many exploits for IE kept showing up. The various Mozilla derivatives were suffering from bloat at the time, and I wanted something small for my restricted memory. (This is no longer an issue because my communcations rig now has 1 GiB memory.)

I really like the tabbed browsing (and optional combination of SDI and MDI). The popup blocker gets rid of some of the more annoying ads. Mouse gestures are interesting for "power users", too, although I'm not using them at present. I'm not using many plugins, so I can't comment on that. Nor have I used "advanced features" that much- just vanilla browsing, and that is done well. The one thing I miss from IE is being able to mark a block with "click", "shift-click".

Incidentally, IE pops up very quickly because it's normally preloaded at startup.

Avant and MyIE2 are just "wrapper" around IE. They seem have some useful features built-in, but they are just as vulnerable as IE is.

Here's another reason not to use IE:

It's super fast in Linux... And there's a reason for that. If you notice when Windows starts, one of the processes is the Explorer.exe shell. That process loads a lot of the libraries/dlls that a lot of other Microsoft programs use, such as Internet Explorer. So, the reason why Internet Explorer loads and operates faster than Firefox is because a lot of the stuff it needs is already in memory/swap.

Mozilla browsers should come with something along the lines of Mozilla QuickStart (forget the name off-hand), which loads when Windows boots and stays running in the background, which allows Mozilla to load faster. I don't work in Windows much, but I've noticed performance is the same or better in Firefox than in IE after the programs have been open for awhile.
