wd400bb vs 7200.7 vs diamondmplus 8 40gb

what would you buy from these three
western digital wd400bb , seagate 7200.7 or diamond max plus 8 all 40gb 7200 rpm .

i need fast and reliable harddrive.

I would go by Seagate.I have used many Seagate drives and never once did any drive die unexpectedly.I have been shocked by Samsung drives though.Always got them replaced within 2 years.

We dont get Western Digital here and the Maxtor is hard to come by.

Western Digital. Had 4 of those 40GBs, never had a problem. Had a 540MB, a 1.2GB, and a 8.1GB too.

Right now I have a 120GB/8MB cache and love it. I also have 60GB/120GB Maxtors, and hate 'em. Slow. Loud. HOT, too. Had to stick a fan blowing air directly over the drives to keep then from overheating.

A friend had a 20GB Maxtor in a full tower case, with a single case fan (it ran a 1GHz Thunderbird and a PCI graphics card, so nothing too extreme in the heat gen deptartment). You couldn't keep your hand on the side of the case next to the drive; too hot (when it was under heavy use, anyway). Yes, poor case airflow was a problem. Swapped the drive for one my old 40GB WD's, the problem went away. He did, finally, install another fan a week or so later.

Note that my 60GB & 120GB don't run as hot as the old 20GB did; but they're still way over the temp my WD runs at (less so for the 120GB, though).

That said, they are supposed to have the thermal problems under control now. Besides, CompUSA has a 250GB Maxtor for $133, no messing with mail-in rebates. Can't beat that.

Pranav, WD HDDs are available here in Mumbai now, as are the Maxtor 200GB 7200RPM 8MB cache models. My dad has a Maxtor 160GB model (5800 rupees + 3 year warranty) on his machine. It is REALLY fast.

seagate has a very long history of lackluster performance

i own a maxtor d540x,i love it. i would definitely buy maxtor if it was diamond max plus 9 its superb. but reviews of diamond max plus 8 are not good.

I would never buy another Maxtor, they fall out of the skies like birds with West Nile...

I have had two of these 40G drives, never a hiccup. They are running right now in my Linux box.

1. Maxtor (the most reliable, often cheapest)
2. Seagate (I hear good things about them, and have 3 plants in Minnesota)
3. Western Digital (Not reliable at all on anything but thier Raptor, low quality, seems slower to me on my one computer that has a WD 80GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache HDD)

I'd suggest heading over to www.storagereview.com and reading up on the results of the reliability survey.

Anything else you hear from people is completely subjective. Unless of course they work in the IT department of a fairly large company (1,000+ computers), where they would see enough hardware to make an opinion worthwhile (assuming there is a decent representation of hardware from all the manufacturers in question).

some very good suggestions.

its close between maxtor and WD ,but seagate is not looking like a worthy competitor is PATA drives.although there SATA are one of the the fastest (quite amazingly).

i would again say that maxtor diamond max plus 9 is a very good drive but diamond max plus 8 is not a class leading drive .

the good thing about WD is that i had never read anything bad about it on any reviewers website and WD got flying marks in performance from the majority of reviewers(atleast before the hitachi 7k250) .

personal reviews are also very important BUT there is no perfect hard drive manufacturer out there and no one can create even 90 % of perfect drives from their manufacturing process.everyone had encountered bad drives from different companies and it can vary from region to region.what i hate about seagate is that they compromise performance for quiet operation .what i like about maxtor is that they dont make earth shattering claims about their drive performance but their drives always remain in the top section and their reliability is very much better than the seagate barracuda ata v.

Well reading the reliability survey from storagereview is the next thing i would definitely do and compare the drives (lets see the results).

Thanks for the info Bhairav.I will check the same with my hardware dealer.But I am not in need of any new HDD at this moment.
I have 2 80Gb Seagate Baracuda's and love them.My brother recently brought a 8 Mb cache 160 GB Seagate Baracuda for himself,from Australia,which has amazing transfer rates.My 80 Gb's heat a little but the 160 Gb is cool as ice and makes very little noise.
I havent tried Maxtor or WD,so I wont say a word on them.As I said earlier Samsung HDD's are not worth my money.

i was pretty confident that i will buy a seagate 7200.7 40gb or 80gb either SATA or with 8mb because of very positive user reviews and recommendation also because of the review at pcworld.

anandtech.com as far i remember according to a poll at msi.com.tw and newegg.com anandtech was the largest viewing website .in these polls 25000 and 20000 users had posted respectively.i also like anandtech very much.(i like tomshardware a little more ).

Well,Seagate also has software available for downloads.I like the DiskWizard software.I have removed bad sector's from Seagate HDD's,software bad sectors ofcourse,not physical.I dont think you can remove bad sectors from any other HDD.

All three brands are good. I have used several Maxtor drives before and they have yet to fail. Next time around, I will try out Seagate as I've heard nothing but good things regarding them. Never dealt with WD, but they have some good drives too.

Let's be frank, as BuddhaTB pointed out, all three brands are good. Just like there are oodles of opinions about which CD burner is the best, there will be the same amount of opinions about which hard drive is the best. Choose either the Seagate, WD, or Maxtor. You can't go wrong with either.
