TWO discs in ONE (LiteOn) DVD-ROM drive

Postby VEFF on Mon Jun 07, 2004 8:26 pm

I was tired around 12:30 AM last night, and accidentally placed a DVD on top of another one already in the DVD-ROM drive.
The drive made a terribly loud scraping noise (the top disc came out scratched all around the circumference near the outer edge).
I ejected it after about 10 - 15 seconds.

The drive seems to work alright, luckily and amazingly, but I wonder if any damage to the motor or other mechanisms may have occurred.
I may never find out, but I was wondering if someone who knew how much clearance a LiteOn LTD163 has, might know if any physical or mechanical damage would or wouldn't have occurred.

Hehe. I've done that a couple of times before when I was really tired and sleepy. Funny thing is, it took me forever to realize what was going on the first time it happened. I noticed that the music being played was that of the first disc and not the second, so I was scratching my head for a while wondering if I had put in the wrong disc before I finally put the two clues (funny noises from the drive and incorrect content) together and realized that the disc that I put in was sitting on top another in the drive.

My drive (48161H) still seems to work okay despite this accident. Though I'm not about to try it again any time soon to see if my drive will still be okay. Maybe if I get too sleep-deprived again. ;)

i wouldn't be surprised if there was any damages on the drive because the laser pickup usually moves with disk center lock, so when two disks are inserted, nothing would be damaged other than disks themselves.

Thanks MadBurner, code65536 for sharing your experiences.
That combined with the technical info shimman gave - exactly what I was looking for - makes me feel better.

if they are CD's then it's bad, the upper one will become bad if scratches are on its top.

but if it's a dvd, not bad, as there is plastic for 0.6 mm on top...

Thanks for the info.
I was aware of the fact that the DVD recording layer is close to the middle of the disc, not the top like CDs.

In this case I was more concerned about damage to the drive than to the the disc, to be honest.
