Dolphin Friendly DVDRs....

Out of curiosity, what do people think about me making my own brand of DVDRs? It would be an Optodisc OEM, since I can get them at a good price. They would be 4x DVD-Rs to start with.

Selling price would be (no more then) one penny less then whatever Meritline is selling Ritek 4x DVDRs for at any given time :wink:

What do people think? Would it be worth doing? I wouldn't be doing it for a little while, but I think I could get a couple of stores to pick up the line of media

kind of hard to say. Depends on your profits, I personally don't buy too much DVD media. acttually i haven't even used all the 4x media i bought after getting the DRU500A

If I had a DRU500a, I probably wouldn't be using much DVDR media either! :wink:

Profits would be pretty good, depending on the volume ordered of course... My minimum would be 10,000pcs (in 25pc cake boxes) but if I got 200,000pcs I'd get a smoking deal that would put most Chinese made DVDRs to shame! :wink:

Can't say I'd buy any, I'm quite happy with Ritek DVD-R's.

Not so sure how you can guarantee a price lower than meritline charges for the DVD-R's, that's an odd pricing point, and you'd have to match every sale...

I also need inkjet printables, heh. Besides, Optodisc quality varies from what I have read. One day you hated the 4x media, and loved the 8x, the next it's the other way around. Just couldn't bring myself to buying Optodisc DVD-R's.

The problem isn't the disc quality, it's the testing quality :evil:

I have no way of knowing if what I'm looking at is accurate, and it's pissing me off to no end! All I can say at this point is everything works, and I haven't had a single problem in anything yet.

Also, out of over 58,000 pcs of the Optodisc 4x DVD-Rs sold in the last 4.5 weeks, I haven't had a single complaint... not even 1 (a lot of people switched from Ritek to Optodisc recently :wink:

).

Also, it is very easy to keep up with Meritline's Ritek pricing. You have to remember that Ritek is the single most expensive Taiwanese made DVDR in the world. And the only reason my DVDRs would only be a little cheaper then Ritek is because I would be getting them in batches of 10,000pcs and Meritline gets them in batches of millions. (also, Meritline is the only good customer that Ritek USA has left! :lol:

)

Well, if the Optodiscs I just ordered turn out to be pretty good, and if they're cheaper than Meritline/Rime/etc's Optodiscs, then yeah, probably would get some. I ordered both + & - to try, so we'll see. No freakin' way to test 'em, though :evil:

Maybe I should grab a PX-712.

A question, though: Would you be getting DVD+R at some point? 4x or 8x. Would the cost savings on the discs be nullifed by the shipping cost to the US?

Well, I wouldn't be personally selling them, I'd be getting computer stores and such to carry them. And I'm sure with a little effort I could get a few people in the U.S. to carry them.

Yes I could get 4x or 8x DVD+Rs, but I have a good deal of faith in the 4x DVD-Rs... I still need more info on the DVD+Rs before I put my name on them... I've worked pretty hard to get some sort of reputation, and I'm not keen on throwing it away on something I'm not 100% sure of.

I still want to see the Dolphin Friendly Label in stores. I don't have a DVD burner yet, therefore I won't be buying any of these DVD-R's in the near future, although, it would still be cool to see. I don't know why. Maybe it's because the I know the man behind the operation, albeit indirectly.

no offence, but i think you should choose some other name for the label than "Dolphin Friendly".

the phrase "Dolphin Friendly" has a very particular meaning. i don't think it's appropriate here.

Wow Dodecahedron, I never took you for an eco-oriented guy :wink:

I was actually thinking something along the lines of having "TheDolphinReview.com" in a curve along the top of the disc, (in blue writing)

The bottom half of the disc would be entirely blue with 3 or 4 cutout silver lines for labeling on. And in small print along the bottom of the disc (in a solver cutout) it would say "no dolphins were harmed in the making of this DVDR - Copyright 2004 All Rights Reserved". And I'd probably have a small blue dolphin on one side, and 1x-4x written above a DVD-R logo on the opposite side of the dolphin.

I think people take recordable media far too seriously, and a brand name with a sense of humour yet a taste for quality would be nice to see! :wink:

(had an discussion a long time ago about CDRW vs. CDR, i think before you came here, where i said i like CDRWs because they're enviromentally friendly, and the other guy basically said up yours

that was the end of the discussion for me)

i think that "Dolphin Friendly" and "no dolphins were harmed in the making of this DVDR" trivializes the effort to protect dolphins.

i'm all for humor but in the right places.

just my opinion, you can take it or leave it, no hard feelings.

a friend of mine pointed out that I better check to make sure that no dolphin's were harmed in the making of the DVDRs, because if it turned out there were, it would be really bad!

OK, the ships that carry the DVDs from the Far East to the States, waste dumped into the ocean -> pollution -> sad dolphin...

cafeteria in the DVD manufacturing plant, serving Tuna-fish sandwiches to the workers for lunch -> dolphins trapped in fishing nets -> dead dolphins

this is getting out of hand

i can't relly see how dolphins come to harm in the process of DVD manufacturing. it's not like the DVD dye is made of dolphin blubber.

Well, the potential enviromental impact from the chemicals used in recordable media is hard to guage without more details... so I think that's why my friend warned me to look into it.

Looks like I won't be getting my own brand of DVDR anytime soon... it's not that I can't do it, it's just that if I don't register the brand name, then someone else can take it and trade mark it, and then I'll never be able to use it again :cry:

and registration is like $1500 USD I'm told. So I don't think it's worth it.

Oh well... dare to dream eh?

From what I can tell, it looks like you're looking at under $500 if you fill out the paperwork correctly. Otherwise, they'll charge you for each mistake you make. :evil:

*WAY* too much legal speak and paperwork involved to make it worth it! I'd rather just publically support certain media, or maybe have my webpage printed in the centre hub.
