conjunctions

General discussion. Come introduce yourself. Talk about whataver you want!

conjunctions

Postby MediumRare on Fri May 21, 2004 9:58 am

There are several conjuctions due shortly (other than "and", "or", "but" etc 8)).

First and foremost is the coming superior conjunction of Venus with the sun, also known as a "transit of Venus" (no, this has nothing to do with bus rides for beauty queens ).

This rare event occurs when the Sun, Venus and Earth lie directly in line and (usually) comes in pairs 8 years apart. It's due this year on 8 June- the last one was 121.5 years ago, and after 2012, you have to wait 105.5 years for the next one- so go out and see it!!!

The full course of the transit is visible in Euope and most of Asia and Africa (and of course in the land of the midnight sun). Korea, Japan and Australia see the first part prior to sunset. The final stages can be seen after sunrise in North America east of the Rockies. There's a good article in the May 2004 issue of Scientific American or vist http://www.transitofvenus.org.

If there's an observatory or Astronomy society near you, check with them- I'm sure they'll have some activities going.

conjunctions and intersections

Postby MediumRare on Fri May 21, 2004 10:03 am

As following the diagram shows, we also have some conjunctions (or rather intersections) coming in the forum in the next days or weeks, unless of course, the posters aren't fully p-p-predictable ().

Image

Here are some predictions (not all events are shown in the diagram) :
  • 23.5.04 aviationwiz outposts eliminator
  • 26.5.04 dodecahedron becomes no. 2 and overtakes cfitz with 4556 posts (unless cfitz recovers from his traumatic experience and visits the forum again). If the trend is based on posts from the last week only, this could be as early as 23.5.04 !
  • 16.6.04 Ian tops 9000 posts
  • 21.6.04 the forum hits 8000 users
  • 25.6.04 dolphinius_rex makes the top 10 when he passes hoxlund
  • 25.7.04 TheWizard tops CDRecorder
  • 11.3.06 dolphinius_rex tops cfitz with 6428 posts (as announced earlier)
  • 30.3.51 Spazmogen passes BuddhaTB (to mention a real long shot, yesterday at 24.4.18 )
As always, the basis for these predictions is of utmost rigidity and precision. They do not depend on the phase of the moon or anyone's grandmother's shoe size or the C1-count of CMC media- just linear extrapolation of least square fits.

One prediction that won't come true is this one:
  • 26.5.04 BuddhaTB passes CDRecorder
because Buddha is (as of this writing) 2 posts higher. He seems to have been activated more by The Great Avatar War than CDRecorder. :D

Wow! I honestly didn't know I was getting that close to the top 10 list!

I'll have to work very hard to make sure I can keep up with my previous prediction as well!

But hey, if all goes well, I may have lot's to add on a regular basis :D

I feel the same way, although I have no wishes to end up in jail, the time I've spent here has been very enjoyable, and a wonderfully educational experience! I only hope I can give back as much as I feel I've gained! :)

Monte is kind of quiet now. Is it because he is in between?

I think Monte is off on a mission of self discovery :)

edit: My mistake, he's still here... on a mission of self discovery

Me too! If he's not careful my prediction might actually come true, and that would most likely spell doom for the whole world... something about one of the final signs of the apololypse or something?

And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, on Center Stage, for (at the very least) this post, we present (drum roll)

jase
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

jase, the man with the many recorders, who was in the top 10 for all of 2003 (despite a long absence starting in Sept.). The following diagram (with some of the forum's middle top posters) fills in the basis for a couple of earlier predictions, and is based on the same data as yesterday:

Image

Since there are no conjunctions pending in the near future, I'll add a (long term) prediction:
  • 17.7.05 jase passes CDRecorder
and a tidbit:
- jase posts 2x as much on Wed. or Fri as on Thurs. or Sun.

Out of curiosity, have you noticed any similar types of posting trends in me?

Nothing special- you're a really regular poster, don't vary more than +- 15% per day of the week. Mild high on Mon (+13%), low on Sat. (-16%). There are some problems with my statistics if I miss a day, but if you're interested, I can post the base table.

Too bad we can't rate post quality. That would make a more interesting graph.
A man has been charged after allegedly punching a 73-year-old woman in the face, breaking her nose and stabbing her in the arm with a corkscrew before hitting a second woman with a bottle at a wedding reception in the Whitsunday Islands.

Hehe, I can explain those statistics in one word: "Girlfriend"

She comes over on the weekend, and leaves Sunday night, and Monday is when I usually do my catch-up

LOL
it was right after the forum was spammed by those gaming idiots.

i happened to be on the forum at the time it was happening.
really funny.
you click on the list of topics you haven't read yet, and every F5 the list gets longer! :o

i instantly emailed Ian
urgent - the forum is being spammed!

to which re replied a few minutes later
No shit.
:o :D
anyway, i went to the forums (fora?) in which i was mod ,FAQ and DVD Recordable, and was clicking the Image s like mad...
interestingly, they didn't spam the CD-RW forum!
i let Ian know
i deleted all their posts in DVD Recordable and FAQ forums, where i have moderator privileges.

so for my efforts i was rewarded by
You're now a mod everywhere
:D

well, i've already put my newfound mod powers to good use a few times.
i edited those llllllllllllllooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg URLs.
they really piss me off, forcing me to scroll horizontally.
so i replace them by something like:
[url=http://www.cdrlabs.com]annoyingly long URL @ meritline - edited by dodecahedron.
please don't do that again. use BBCode[/url]

i hope noone takes offence by that.
