Subtitles in PowerDVD

I have PowerDVD XP and I ran into a slightly disturbing problem. I don't yet have any other movie than Magnolia but at least with that movie the subtitles won't change until the next ones come up. So if there's a long period without talk, I still see the last sentence, creating a strange feeling. I haven't been able to find anything that would help in options. So am I blind, is it a bug in PowerDVD or are the subtitles just made poorly? Or something completely different?

I think (from memory) that the subtitles (Dutch) worked ok for this movie on a standalone player (CyberHome). Maybe it really is a bug or "Feature" of PowerDVD.

On the other hand, there seem to be many, many DVDs that are authored very badly. I've seen quite a few recently that don't even seem to have the CSS protection
