This isn't news, and it wasn't the judge that was bribed. The people who took the bribe money were the congressional representatives and senators who voted for the DMCA.

Yes, it sucks that the RIAA and MPIAA are making the laws of America either directly or indirectly, but the judge made the right decision given the constaints of the DMCA. Don't blame him, blame the RIAA, MPIAA and all the congress people who voted for DMCA.

It's not just the US either- the same kind of law is present in most of Europe now. You're not allowed to disable an "effective/efficient/active" copy protection mechanism (the German term is "wirksam" which can mean any or all of those). This means that you're allowed to make a private copy of a CD or DVD, but aren't allowed to circumvent any protection schemes.
