Maybe, maybe not. It's not all about buffer size - drive's firmware and chipset has to know how to use it efficiently...

...just like hard drive's buffer. If you frequently access the same files, larger buffer size is favourable. If you're only transferring files from one place to anther, buffer size doesn't matter that much. Threrfore, 128 KB buffer is enough for "smart" DVD-ROM drives. And Toshiba SD-M1712 sure is one of them.
