Best Ripping/Reading DVD-ROM?

I'm after a fast ripping & reading DVD-ROM. I got the LG but its too slow for my liking. I heard that the LiteOn 166S is very good, any other recommendations are greatly appreciated.

However, Tosiba drives are harder to find nowadays, NewEgg still has some.

check out pioneer 120, toshiba m1712, lite-on (JLMS)166s

out of all three the 120 is the quietest and all rip at 16x

ive owned all drives except the pioneer 120, but aviationwiz does

both the toshiba and lite-on were very loud

for the toshiba to acheive 16x ripping, it has to be loaded with patched firmware

Thanks guys.

I couldn't find anywhere in OZ where I can get the Toshiba. The 120 cost 50% more than the 166S and doesn't read DVD+R.
LiteOn 166S is my only choice at the moment.

I have the Pioneer 120 it reads DVD+R fine. Of course, Pioneer would not want to admit that, but it reads DVD+R as much as any other drive.

So if you could choose between the Pioneer 106s and the Toshiba M1712, which would be more desirable?

The slot loading bit is cool, but not necessary. I am leaning toward the Pioneer simply because you get 16x ripping right out the box without the need for hacked firmware.

id go for the 120s, because you can't find the 106s anymore

the m1712 with hacked firmware was very loud when reading anything but dvds, probably cause of the higher rotation speeds caused by the hacked firmware

but thats only my speculation, if I didn't load the hacked firmware it would rip at its normal locked speeds, but very quiet

Toshiba is loud when you put in an unballanced and/or overweighted disc.

I've noticed this as well. I've ripped a few discs where the previous owner had printed hub stickers for and have had this problem with almost every one of them.

Thanks everyone. I was able to get a Pioneer 106s at respectable price-- cheaper than the New Egg Toshibas.

I was able to find someone locally who no longer wanted the drive. It is slightly used, but so far seems great!

Does Pioneer make a black drive? I'm looking for a quiet drive for a HTPC. Otherwise I'll go with the Tosbiba. Anybody have the Samsung?

LiteOn DVD-ROM drives are good, too--like the Toshiba drives, there exists no-limit firmwares for them as well... Perhaps not the most quiet, but at 16x, no drive is going to be very quiet.

I have the Samsung 352B. Its quiet and reads at 16X on single layer discs and I have reached up to 8.6 on Double Layer pressed disc. This drive also reads all dvd formats: DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD-Ram. Its a great drive, but cost a little more! :lol:

IMHO performance, specifically where ripping DVD9s in DVDDecrypter, hasn't improved much with '16x' DVD-ROMs: the best IDE DVD ripper I've used for this was a Pioneer 105 DVD-burner w/ hacked f/w.

- I have an 'old' 10x SCSI Pioneer 305S DVD-ROM which rips most every DVD9 at just under 8x average . . . quietly, too . . .
