What is the best DVD burner on the market today?

Hi everyone,

I would like to buy a DVD burner but I don't know wich one to choose.

It would be very kind of you if you can give me some advice.

Please, dont send me thrue internet reviews.

I really can't say which is the best burner out there or for you, but, in my opinion, first you have to ask yourself how much you want spend? Second, you have to do some research and read reviews. Once you find something you think you like then you can use a forum like CDRLabs and read the experience of current owners. Then you can make a choice according to your needs.

all the best burners have advantages and disadvantages. If you want a good quality burner for Ritek 4x DVD-Rs, then go for the Pioneer DVR-107. If you want a good burner for RICOHJPNR01 4x DVD+Rs, then get the NEC 2500. If you want to spend a lot of money, get the Plextor 708a.

I wish I had $1 for every time this question is asked. I could probably retire and move to Florida.

Why not make a sticky with an intro by yourself that details your thoughts ( strengths and weaknesses ) about the current top drives and all of us can update with new comments as new drives come out ?

I'm not really a big fan of "top 10" lists and such. I'd rather leave that to magazines like PC Mag. Instead of buying the #1 drive on some list, people should make up their minds themselves. They should look at their needs and try to find a drive that fits them. They'll be much happier with their decision that way.

Of course, people are lazy and would rather have everything handed to them so this rarely happens. :roll:

Look at the quality of the burns on C't magazine esp at 8x. One of the best kept secrets (based on what I've read) is a Philips/BenQ.

either the top 3 brands:

1. Pioneer DVR-107 - the a07 is same thing, so don't ask
2. Plextor 708A
3. NEC ND-2500A

of course gotta put pioneer first, its my current burner

again dolp is right, it all depends on media your gonna burn. Weather it be dvd-r, dvd+r, and what your gonna be putting on them

in my experience, dvd-r is more compatible, and all i use my dvd burner for is burning movies on Ritek G04 Media

mwave.com has them for $95, not sure if they ship to Canada, but maybe you know someone in seattle anyway.

Also an OfficeMax KyHpermedia 8x made in Mayalsia is suppose to be a BenQ supposedly flashable to BenQ firmware too...$70 after rebates.

Thanks... and actually, I do know a couple people in the U.S. that could help me, but the next DVD burner I buy will be the NEC 2500, the next LG DVD burner (after the 4082B!) or something along those lines. I buy drives for 2 reasons:

1. Outright burn quality (which is why I have the Pioneer DVR-107)
2. A lot of other people have the same drive, and can relate to my testing

if I can combine both reasons, then I purchase the drive

so since NEC and LG drives are very popular right now, and both fairly good burners, they are more likely to be future purchases for me. ...first I need a second computer though! :wink:

You would have burst my bubble if they carried the BenQ which I found out they do now ... not sure they did a week ago, but it was $134 vs $98 for the 2500A. Anyway so far its read the DVDs he's throwingin it without problems...my most immediate concern with this writer.

You know, these "best drive" threads are very human. We all would like to get the best, if possible.

It's just that best is an undefined equation that will never reveal itself to us in full and as such it is forever unattainable.

There is no such thing as a best drive.

Something I keep trying to get across on other forums is that it's synergy between writer and media that's important.

The NEC2500A is in some ways one of the best writers on the market. But if you burn Ritek G04 media, forget it.

The Pioneer, in my experience, A06 and A07 provide the best -R writing. It seems that the Benq/Philips may be the best at +R. Again though, both of these drives are no good to you if your favoured media type doesn't work well with them.
