new naming scheme for Lite-On drives ?

While Lite-On is focusing on DVD writers these days, they haven't given up on the CD-RW market yet. Lite-On has released some information on a new 53/32/52 CD-RW, the SOHC-5238S.

While the SOHC-5238S's specs are similar to that of the LTR-52327S, the two drives use different chipsets. When the SOHC-5238S ships, it will be interesting to see how the two drives compare. More information on the drive can be found on Lite-On's website.

anyone notice the change in the naming scheme?
i would've expected it to be SOHC-52328S !
yeah, they changed LTR to SOHC but still, when in DVDs they changed LDW to SOHW they kept the format of the numbers the same, e.g. LDW-811S ... SOHW-812S.

besides, isn't SOHC the code of the line of combo drives not CDRW drives? SOHC-5232K

but then the previous combo was LTC-48161H...so maybe SOHC-5232K is consistent, just 4 digits and the 2nd 2 is a "generation" digit (1H, 2K etc.) and not part of the "32" which stands for 32x rewriting speed...so there is a new naming scheme...???

Maybe Lite-On is teaming up with Toyota.

It should be SOHR-5238S, not SOHC-5238S.

SOHC is the new Sony designation.
I have a hunch that what we will see is the 52x combo drive without the DVD hardware and firmware.

OK so it should be SOHR (SOHC was a typo or something).

but i was really referring to the change in the second part of the name, not the letters at the start.

up till now all the CD-R/W and combo drives had (apart from LTR for CD-R/W drive, LTC for combo) a 5 digit + 1 letter designation : xxyyza
xx - writing speed
yy - rewriting speed
z - design generation number
a - letter designating a variation of the hardware.

now it's SOHC-5232K and SOHR-5238S

with the SOHC-5232K it still fitted a similar scheme: xxyya like before. but the SOHR-5238S doesn't fit this.
maybe with the SOHR-5238S it's a new scheme xxyza ? i mean, new rewriting speeds aren't less than 24x nowadays, maybe y=2 stands for 24x, y=3 stands for 32x ? and (wishfully) y=4 will be 40x or 48x rewriting? also make sense because then 5238S conforms to a=8 - 8th generation, which makes sense.

The H is not for Hardware, but for the form of the drive; Half Height.

My guess is that SOHW stands for Sony Optical Hardware. The W at the end is either from "hardware" or else is just used for whatever reason Liteon chose LDW for their DVD Burner names. SOHC should be for Sony Optical Hardware - Combo, SOHR should be for Sony Optical Hardware Recorder and SOHD should be for Sony Optical Hardware - DVD-ROM.

at least this makes things more consistently organized.
