According to this article (http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/45380), Plextor is still investigating the possibility of Dual Layer recording for the PX-712A.

VEFF: Now you finally know what to do with your 2 PX-708As in April 8)

I'll believe it when I see it. I think Plex locks down specs pretty early and if the drive is going to be released next month, it's safe to say no dual layer support until the next drive comes out.

I agree with you as well. I believe they will save that feature for the PX-716A as well. Seems logical.

So now when can I preorder one of these 712s??

Ian, on the the back of the 712SA, is that just the Sata connector or is the audio cable connector for cds that goes to your sound card, and the molex power connector in there as well.

Ian has the PX-712AS on the brain. On the front page:

Other than the fact that its missing a head phone jack, the PX-712AS looks very similar to Plextor's 8x DVD±RW, the PX-712AS.

Interesting. I just bought the 708A in November to watch DVDs and backup my data, and I haven't used it much at all due to my computer has been screwed up the past 4 months. The 708A came out in September and now in April their next drive is coming out. I suppose by December the 16x drive will be out. I rather wait until then and get the 16x drive which will hopefully have dual-layer recording.

I'm planning on getting a DVD-Rom drive and I thought about the Plextor Premium but with this 12x drive the CD speeds are 48x/24x/48x which is one step down from the Premium's 52x/32x/52x speeds. So, it looks like there is no point in getting the Plextor Premium. I read some articles a few months back that said DVD 16x is probably where their going to top out. The only other feature will be dual-layer. I guess its better to ship the 12x drive and go from the 708A to the 16x.

Ian, on the the back of the 712SA, is that just the Sata connector or is the audio cable connector for cds that goes to your sound card, and the molex power connector in there as well.

It looks to me that it is the SATA data cable and the SATA power cable and thats it. The 2 little notches on the ends could be for Western Digital's intergrated cable which combines the 2 SATA cable into one large connector. I could be wrong though.

SATA version external?

Postby bac on Wed Mar 10, 2004 10:48 pm

I wonder when the external SATA standard will get finalized. Would be nice to put one of these in an external enclosure without having to worry about bridge board issues.

Is it 712AS or 712SA?
The pic Ian posted has '712SA' stamped on the drive's bezel, but the story says '712AS'.

My motherboard doesn't have SATA so I'll just get a new motherboard at the same time.

My motherboard has it but already connected to 2 HDs in RAID, so I will get a extra SATA pci card.

Plextor 712SA not worth the money if you have the 708A

Postby Laserburn on Fri Mar 12, 2004 9:28 am

I have bought the Plextor 708a a few weeks ago for 180 euro.
A fantastic drive for the money, en yes 2 years warranty is great !!
And YES, 8x writing is fast !

I'm not feel sorry 'bout the fact that I've not been waiting till April to buy the 712SA !!!

What did it offer more to me, than my 708A ?

DVD+R 8 x ---> 12 x , sounds great but it's just +2 minutes faster !

DVD-R 4 x ---> 8 x , It's a lot faster, but I'm not often using dvd-r

CD-R 40 x ---> 48 x , It's just a little 1 minute faster !

DVD-RW 2,4 x ---> 4x , It's about 6 - 8 minutes faster, but do I use the
dvd - standard a lot ? NO

The only fat +++point is the buffer that was build up from 2 to 8 MB buffer !!!

Yes, 2 MB buffer is very small in my Plextor, but nowadays you can use your PC buffer in some burnprogramms to let it burn smoothly with more than 20 MB buffer extra ! (Nero, Clone CD e.m.a.)

No I enjoy my Plextor 708A and wait about 1,5 - 2 years, maybe there will be 8 x dual-layer burners at that time !

No, my Plextor 708A is a very solid/fast drive with 2 years collect en return warranty for the coming 2 years !!

Conclusion: If you can't wait 2 minutes longer to wait for a dvd/cd-burn, than you have to buy the px-712a, but it cost you 50 euro's more for that little faster speeds !!!
