Finally! Thank you Plextor, you have listened the requests and delivered.

Combining kProbe, UM Doctor Pro II and the upcoming Plextools Pro and we will gain a better insight into the recording quality / media compatiblity on drives.

Now, it's time for Pioneer and/or BenQ to step up and offer their internal tools for public consumption as well. We know they are capable and they must have tools.

If this continues, maybe these things will become commonplace in a few years and people will finally come to understand what "burn quality" and "media compatibility" roughly mean.

Now most people (outside these forums) just think that it either works or it's a coaster.

(Adding Plex 712 on my list of drives to purchase).

That's about the time I'm going to pay my Credit Card bill for the DVR-107. I'll buy it early May, pay it late June...I'll wait for the SATA version though

I am curious as to why you got rid of your PX-708A in favor of a Pioneer DVR-107 in the first place?
I know you were the biggest proponent of Plextor here.

Also, if you switched from your Plextor PX-708A to the Pioneer DVR-107, why are you so upset now that Plextor has announced a burner only slightly faster than the 708A you owned?

Maybe I am missing something?

The PX-708A is still here as a second burner, and will be continued to use as such, and as my main DVD+R writer. The DVR-107 will be used for DVD-R @ 8x. The PX-712SA will become my ultra primary burner when I get it.

Why am I pissed? Because I just bought a drive and now I have to buy a new one!

I got the DVR-107 because of the hacked firmware availbility which allows me to write to my RITEKG04's @8x, and the excellent quality at that!

I did need a new drive anyway...Of course, that could have been a Pioneer 120 DVD-ROM!

According to this article (http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/45380), Plextor is still investigating the possibility of Dual Layer recording for the PX-712A.

If it does end up supporting DL, then I would be interested.
Otherwise I won't bother, since 8X to 12X will not make enough of a difference in burn time to dump my 708As. I'd rather wait for 16X and D/L capability...

I may sell my PX-708As soon, before they become worth much less, and then wait a while for the first high quality 16X, DL-capable burner.

Well, you can always sell your DVR-107 before its market price drops...

I personally will wait till a 16X and/or DL DVD burner comes out.
If the 712A burns DL, it would be an interesting proposition.
If not, I will wait, as stated directly above.

Make sure on the flight over, that if you are using a laptop, you have your Plextor ( sorry that would be ) PIONEER DVR 107 in a USB 2 enclosure that is battery powered. LOL

if you are planning for the SATA version (like I am), please make sure (if you haven't already) that your SATA controller supports ATAPI devices. Not all do. Just making sure you won't be in for a nasty surprise.

That's only half of the picture. You are clearly thinking of the transfer speeds only.

Serial ATA's point-to-point nature and no need for half-assed bus arbitration protocols (slave/master on PATA) should ensure that the compatibility problems of having two opticals on the same channel are in the past.

If you haven't run into optical ATAPI drive compatibility problems when run on the same PATA channel, be thankful. I know how painful they can be, having tried several dozens of various drives from various manufacturers sharing the same channel.

Furthermore, if NCQ from SATA II is to be implemented on ATAPI devices, we could see additional higher burst transfers, lower seek times and lower cpu utilisation figures.

As a last point, if you consider that you can PCI bus arbitrate four devices using one IRQ (one SATA controller), you are actually saving resources with SATA. The same on PATA would require 2 IRQs and even then the devices would share the ATA channel.

Putting all this together, SATA is already as it is useful for ATAPI devices and can only become more so in the future.

Actually, that response is still 90% hype. Big deal on 50% increase in burst speed for 10ms over a 10 minute burn - not even measureable. Two current, state of the art opticals one the same channel having conflicts? I don't and if I did I get rid of the bad drive. Can you hook up more than 4 drives without a PCI card? Yes. Highly advantageous for 2% of the computer users that want to do that. And how many of those really need more than 4 drives? Please don't respond that Hox and Wiz do. Their needs are to satisfy their hobbyist enjoyment. They don't "need" them in the sense of a professional, like my tax accountant, needs them (which he really doesn't either).
