Pioneer DVR A06, 106 and Teac DW 50D-no burnproof with DVD?

Postby Scour on Mon Oct 20, 2003 8:09 pm

Hello!

I heard that these writers don´t have a buffer underrun proof when writing DVD, but they have at CD-R?

Thanks

Where did you hear that? All DVD burners can do linking to join separate regions formed when the laser is stopped and started. Both the +R and -R standards define the linking technology to be used with their respective media. You may not see it specifically called "buffer underrun protection", but it servers the same purpose (and others).

well, linking is not used only for buffer-underrun-prevention technologies. it's used in Z-CLV writing too.

are we sure that the Lossless Linking (or whatever) defined in the + and - standards are linking for buffer-underrun-prevention technologies ?

Yes, that is why I said, "it serves the same purpose (and others)."

It is possible that some manufacturers would bother to include the linking support but not implement buffer underrun protection. It would be a little silly to include one but not the other, but sillier stuff has happened. (By the way, do you remember any early Z-CLV CD-RW drives that did not include buffer underrun protection? Those memories are fading into the distant past for me... :( )

In addition, I believe linking (particularly lossless linking) is a newer part of the -R standard, so it is possible that older -R drives might not include either it or buffer underrun protection. But I don't know any newer drives that do not.

Finally, some have reported that there are programs (such as Toast for the Mac) that don't support the buffer underrun protection on the A06 when burning DVDs. Roxio has supposedly acknowledged that this is a problem in their software. Perhaps Scour saw part of such a report and thought the problem was with the drive, not the software.

my point (about other uses of Lossless Linking or the -R/W equivalent) is even less sensible, considering that (AFAIK) only the Plextor 708 writes using ZCLV strategy, all others drives (1x-4x) write CLV.

(or maybe some write CAV? not that i know of it, but it doesn't matter as far as this discussion goes).

Yes, as far as I know the vast majority of current drives are CLV, with a smattering of Z-CLV in the newer, higher speed drives and none using CAV. And you are correct that the A06 uses CLV writing, so the Z-CLV aspect isn't relevant to Scour's particular question. Still, your question was not unreasonable.
