Pioneer BDR-203BK 8X BD burner

Postby Matrix3 on Wed Feb 04, 2009 2:42 am

Just to inform you that this drive is available at Newegg $250 and Mwave for $217. This is significantly cheaper than Sony 8X Blu burner that goes for $400. I hope to see your review of this drive soon.

Specs here (I believe they are more accurate than the newegg.com specs):

http://www.dvd-r.jpn.org/BDR-203/index.html

BD-R DL is 6x (for ordinary and LTH)

Chipset is Renesas R8J32710TFHF

Finally a drive with a decent price.

Now if only the disc cost came down and the write quality went up.

The lack of 6x BD-R media is really holding these drives back.. at least in the US. If you buy a drive like the Sony, you're limited to only 6x because the Panasonic media it requires isn't available here. At least with LG's new 8x drive, you're supposed to be able to write to 2x and 4x BD-R media at 8x.

Why is BD-R DL at 6X? Their web site

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/ ... rs/BDR-203

shows BD-R DL is at 8X.

Also, I'm hoping this drive can do the job. Because w/ the Sony, it can only write to the 50 GB half way thru at max. 8X speed, and the Sony can't set BookType on DVD+R. So it's just another disappointment from Sony.

So if Pioneer doesn't deliver, I don't know who I can go with. I won't consider cheap names like LiteOn or LG

What is the hardware and software requirement of this unit? I click the above link and it doesn't show.

For those that has the manual, can any1 scan the sys. requirement page and upload?

Also, has any1 use Nero 9.xx and has Nero able to recognize the drive and work seamlessly w/ Nero 9?
